FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Golden Eagles continued their season at the Indiana Tech Invite in Fort Wayne and saw a strong 3,000m on both the men's and women's side to highlight the day.
Colten Covington and
Zach Theeuwes both hit the NAIA "A" standard on the men's side, while
Nygia Pollard hit an NAIA "A" standard with the fastest time in the country to date this season. CU will have some athletes back in action tomorrow over at Aquinas, as the throwers and jumpers will compete throughout the day at Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center.
Men's Results
Josh DeVries competed in the first event on the men's side in the pole vault, and finished third with a vault of 4.45m.
Peter Willcome continued his strong start to the indoor season, with an 8.75 mark in the 60m hurdles for a PR. This also moves him to sixth all-time on the CU indoor list and placed him 10
th in the event at Indiana Tech.
The men opened distance running with two national qualifying marks as
Colten Covington and
Zach Theeuwes earned "A" Standards and sit within the NAIA top 16 with huge PR's. Covington went 8:39.43 to win the event and move up to eighth all-time on CU's indoor list. He was followed by Theeuwes in his first collegiate race with a time of 8:44.84 to place second and finish 11
th all-time in CU program history.
In the mile,
Owen Woltjer recorded a strong time of 4:27.00 for a PR to win the race.
Women's Results
The day began with the women's pole vault were
Ashley Verplank finished second clearing 3.40m. This mark was two centimeters shy of her PR, but was good enough to put her on the NAIA Top 16 national performers list.
Next came the high jump were
Kaitlin Essig moved into a tie for 10
th place in CU indoor program history clearing 1.60m for a new PR. Essig finished second in the event, followed by freshman
Braely Herrema with a jump of 1.55m.
Distance running opened with the 3,000m that saw
Annika Shoemaker record a new PR of 10:43.72 to win the race.
Brenna Stratton also recorded a PR with a time of 11:31.96.
The night ended with the women's 3,000m as
Nygia Pollard dominated the field to record a PR and the fastest time in the country so far this season at 10:04.76 which is good for an NAIA "A" Standard.
Haley Nieuwkoop continued her strong season as well with a PR and eighth place finish with a time of 10:41.80.
What's Next?
Cornerstone will see the throwers and jumpers competing at Aquinas tomorrow throughout the day to conclude the weekend before heading back to Indiana Wesleyan for a two-day on February 5 and 6.
