Baseball drops two more against Doane

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BETTENDORF, Iowa – Cornerstone concluded a four-game set with Doane that did not become official until Thursday morning, dropping both games to fall in all four in the series. CU lost 11-4 in game one and 6-0 in game two which drops their record to .500 at 5-5 on the year. The Golden Eagles will continue non-conference play on Tuesday against a WHAC opponent as they will travel to Ann Arbor to get a look at the Concordia Cardinals. First pitch set for 1 p.m. with a double-header scheduled in Ann Arbor. 

Game One – Doane – 11 Cornerstone - 4
  • The Golden Eagles once again got out to a fast start with Jordan Wenzel and Austin Hurt each getting on base in the top of the first and later scoring on an Isaac Tayes two RBI hit. 
  • Jared Riley started on the mound for the first time this season and struggled early as the Tigers immediately responded in the bottom of the first to score five runs and take a 5-2 lead. 
  • In the bottom of the second, Doane added one more run to increase their edge to 6-2. 
  • Brendan Miller replaced Riley in the bottom of the third, but Doane was still able to find their offense, scoring four more runs to extend their advantage to 10-2. 
  • In the fourth and fifth innings, CU was able to get a run back, as Grant Young scored on a Samuel Bussler single and Landon Poll scored after a single. Doane scored one in the bottom of the fourth however as CU trailed 11-4 after four and a half innings of play. 
  • Brendan Miller closed the door on the Tigers offense in the final two innings of work, but Cornerstone was unable to score as they fell 11-4 in game one. 
 
Game Two – Doane – 6 Cornerstone - 0
  • In game two it was Doane who got on the board first, scoring four in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. 
  • Grant Young settled in on the mound, recording a big double-play in the bottom of the third to hold Doane to the four runs. The CU offense continued to be stifled however as they continued to trail 4-0. 
  • Grant Young flashed the leather from the mound in the bottom of the fifth making a great grab to keep the deficit at four. 
  • Young's day would be done on the mound after Doane was able to score two more in the bottom of the fifth. CU brought in Michael Foster in relief and he recorded the final two outs of the inning. 
  • Cornerstone was unable to muster any offense in their final chance at bat falling in game two, 6-0. 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone travels to Concordia on Tuesday for a non-conference double-header with Concordia starting at 1 p.m.
