Four Golden Eagles earn five WHAC Player of the Week Honors

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Golden Eagles once again saw a strong week of athletic competition as four athletes earned five Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Player of the Week Honors. After the women's volleyball program and the cross country programs each saw Conference Championships this past weekend, Kayla Clark, Haley NieuwkoopLuke Pohl, and Jackie Stanko, all earned WHAC honors. Nieuwkoop became the first Golden Eagle in this unique season to earn cross-sport awards as she was named the Cross Country Runner of the Week and the Outdoor Track & Field Runner of the Week. 

Kayla Clark
Senior setter Kayla Clark returned to the WHAC Setter of the Week honors for the fifth time this season after a weekly best 12.33 assists per game in the Golden Eagles pair of wins over Concordia and Spring Arbor. She recorded a season high 51 assists against Spring Arbor and helped CU clinch the WHAC Regular Season Title on Friday night vs. Concordia. She know leads the WHAC with 10.3 assists per set going into the final week of the regular season. 

Haley Nieuwkoop
Sophomore Haley Nieuwkoop became the first Golden Eagle in the unique year to win WHAC Runner of the Week in two different sports, doing so in cross country and outdoor track & field. Nieuwkoop began her week at the WHAC Cross Country Championships where she coasted to a first place finish with a time of 18:17 to be named the Conference Runner of the Year. The following day, she then ran another 5k at the IWU Polar Bear Invite, and won that event with a PR time of 17:38.37. This mark was also good for third best in CU outdoor track & field history. 

Luke Pohl
Sophomore Luke Pohl returned to the WHAC Runner of the Week honors after the top mark at the Cross Country Conference Championships with a time of 25:22. He was named the WHAC Runner of the Year and helped his team to their second consecutive WHAC Team Championship with seven of the top 10 runners in the event. 

Jackie Stanko 
Senior Jackie Stanko was named the WHAC Attacker of the Week for the first time this season after a season high 14 kills in the win vs. Spring Arbor. She also recorded nine kills in the game against Concordia that clinched the WHAC Regular Season Title. Stanko was dominant at the net with a hitting percentage of .444 on the week as the team improves to 19-2 overall.
