GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Cornerstone Softball team will continue its lengthy homestand with two more doubleheaders this week. The team will host Indiana University South Bend on Wednesday in non-conference action before returning to WHAC play on Saturday when Madonna comes to town. The Golden Eagles (9-5, 2-2 WHAC) split both of their doubleheaders last week against Northwestern Ohio and Indiana Tech. Cornerstone Notes
The Golden Eagles are a respectable 9-5 through 14 games with an even 2-2 record in WHAC play. On all seven game days this season the team has ended the day with a win, going 7-0 in game twos so far. The team is in the middle of a stretch of eight consecutive home doubleheaders, spanning a whole month from start to finish.
Sierra Sanchez leads the team with 16 hits and 17 RBI. Sanchez shares the team-high in the home run category with
Alessa Baldwin-Buchnerand
McKenzie Butgereit, who all have three.
Kaitlin Johnsonleads the team with a .424 batting average and a .788 slugging percentage. The pitching staff has a combined ERA of 5.49 and is led by
Mikayla Meade with 38.2 innings and
Kaitlin Johnson with 32.2 innings of work.
IU South Bend Notes
IU-South Bend is 8-10 this season. Mackenzie Myars leads the team offensively with a .453 batting average, 13 RBI, and six home runs. As a team, the Titans are batting .301 through 18 games. The pitching staff has a combined ERA of 5.19 and is led by Aly Brickel with five complete games so far and Becca Stevens who has a .291 batting average against. The lone matchup between IUSB and CU came in Florida in 2018 when the Titans prevailed 4-1.
Madonna Notes
The Crusaders are 11-3 this season and are receiving votes in the most recent national poll. Madonna is yet to play any WHAC games, but they are the favorites to claim the conference title, just as they did in three straight years from 2017 to 2019. Madonna will have had two full weeks between games by the time they face off against Cornerstone on Saturday. Kattie Popko leads the team with an impressive .600 batting average with 27 hits in 45 at bats along with a team high 12 RBI and 12 runs scored. Defensively, Madonna has one of the best pitching staffs in the conference, with a 2.44 combined ERA.
