Women’s Soccer returns with two match week including WHAC opener

9/20/2021 1:22:00 PM

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – After a near two week break from competition, Cornerstone continues the month long season opening home stand with a match vs. Bethel University on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. and Madonna for the WHAC opener on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. So far this year, Cornerstone has gone 2-0-1, most recently defeating Olivet Nazarene 2-1 at home on September 8. September Weather
As we get farther into the fall season, the September weather is beginning to hit the Golden Eagles with a much cooler temperature on the horizon for the upcoming games. It looks like CU might have to brave some rain on Tuesday with a high of 72 degrees and showers expected all day, and then they will see a beautiful fall day on Saturday of 66 degrees and mostly sunny.

Breaking the 8's
Senior forward Kylie Adams has begun her career with eight points in each of her first three seasons. Through three games, she already has six, putting her on pace to crush her previous career high in both goals and assists. Outside of Alexys Riksen, Cornerstone has not seen an athlete earn 20 points since Lexi Brisson-Fast in the 2014 year.

Yellow Cards
Last time out, Cornerstone received two yellow cards in the same game for the first time since the 2019 season. Head Coach Randy Strawser and the Golden Eagles are one of the best in the country at avoiding cards however, receiving just 28 yellows in the last decade with the most in a single season being seven all the way back in the 2012 season. Cornerstone has also seen just one red card in the last 10 years.

Deep Bench
Cornerstone continues to utilize a deep bench even in tight games as last time out, CU used seven substitutes vs. Olivet Nazarene. Only four players played the full 90 minutes in Lucy Bouvier and Katelyn Lane on the back line as well as Skylar Scholten in the midfield and the keeper Hope Steenwyk

Scouting Bethel
The Pilots have been busy in the early season, playing eight games already this year, but they have been unable to record a win going 0-8 in those games. Bethel has just one win in their last 21 tries dating back to the 2020 season as they have a very young roster with no seniors this season. BU went under a coaching transition two years ago as well as Jason Freeman is now trying to turn the program with his young team. The defense has been solid for the Pilots, but they have suffered multiple heartbreaking setbacks losing six of their eight games by one goal and five of those 2-1. Offensively it has been a struggle to find a primary goal scorer, with seven goals being scored by five different players. Freshman Keeper Corryn Berlin has played every minute in net and given up 18 goals with 43 saves.
