ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Golden Eagles demolished the program's all-time top 10 lists, including five NAIA Auto Qualifications and one NAIA Provisional Standard performance at the Mike Lintz Alumni Meet on Saturday afternoon.
Colten Covington and
Josh DeVries earned the Auto Standards on the men's side, while
Malarie Pinwar,
Morgan Vargo, and
Ashley Verplank earned Auto Standards on the women's side. Cornerstone will head back to GVSU for one last meet before going to Aquinas to open February as they compete in the GVSU Bill Clinger Classic on Friday, January 27.
Men's Results:
Freshman
Phoenix Velthouse got off to a great start in the 100m hurdles on the men's side, recording a time of 8.66 to move to sixth all-time in program history.
Seth Stoltz crushed his personal best with a 6.95 in the 60m to tie for second all-time in CU indoor program history and finish sixth in the event.
In the 60m Hurdles,
Patrick Adams went 8.45 to better his own Freshman Record from last week and stay in third place all-time on the CU indoor list.
A trio of Golden Eagles highlighted the shotput with
Ryan Shinabery,
Nick Huynh, and
Stephen Weflen all recording PR's. Shinabery won the event at 13.85m to stay fifth all-time, Hunyh finished second at 13.55m to move to sixth all-time, and Weflen finished sixth in the event with a PR of 12.27m.
Spencer VanderZwagg added a top 10 performance in the 800m with a time of 1:56.12 for a new PR. He would move to seventh all-time in CU indoor program history.
Josh DeVries later recorded an NAIA Auto Standard in the pole vault for the first time of the season. He cleared 4.76m to return to South Dakota. DeVries attempted 4.91m looking for a new PR but could not clear for an event best 4.76m clearance.
More success on the distance front came from senior
Colten Covington with a time of 8:26.33 in the 3000m to earn an NAIA Auto Standard. The mark is a new PR for Covington and moves him to third all-time in program history.
The throws success continued at weight throw, highlighted by
Nick Huynh earning a NAIA "B" Standard with a mark of 16.31m.
Ryan Shinabery and
Stephen Weflen each PR'd in the weight throw to make it a personal best in both shot put and weight throw on the day.
Women's Results:
The highlights began with
Braely Herrema going 9.49 in the 60m hurdles nearly hitting her program ninth best mark she set just a week ago, but again advanced to finals. In finals, Herrema found a PR of 9.32 to tie former teammate Morgan Luedy for seventh all-time on CU's indoor list.
Morgan Vargo later earned her first NAIA Auto Qualifying mark of the 2023 season in the long jump with a jump of 5.68m. The mark would make finals, but she would not top it ending the event with a one-centimeter PR.
Katelynn Dix added the next women's highlight with an 8.05 in the 60m to move to fifth all-time in program history and finish second in her heat to advance to finals. She then added an even better time in finals of 7.94 to jump all the way to second all-time in program history.
Ashley Verplank continued her dominance in pole vault, improving upon her NAIA Auto Standard she set last week. She recorded a best jump of 3.75 at the Mike Lintz Alumni Meet.
Malarie Pinwar continued her NAIA "A" Standard stretch with a Freshman Record of 4:59.37 in the mile. The mark was also good for second all-time and second at the Mike Lintz Alumni Meet.
In the throws, freshman
Claire Meacham went 13.69 meters in the weight throw to move to ninth all-time and come within reach of the 14.39m freshman record. Meacham won the event overall.
The duo of
Halle Schnyders and
Katelynn Dix competed in back-to-back heats of the 200m. Schnyders recorded a 26.47 first to move to seventh all-time with a new PR. Dix followed with a 26.46 to move into seventh herself with a PR and move Schnyders back to eighth all-time.
Sophomore
Sara Genzink earned an event victory in the 400m later in the afternoon with a time of 59.95.
In shot put, freshman
Claire Meacham and
Ava Muir both earned personal bests as well. CU throws as a team combined for seven personal bests on the day.
What's Next?
Cornerstone will keep the stretch at GVSU active for one more week with a rare Friday meet at the GVSU Bill Clinger Classic. Action expected to start at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 27.
