Women’s Track & Field places second; Men third at the WHAC Indoor Championships

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Golden Eagles added three more WHAC Champions to their totals and another freshman record on the final day of the conference indoor championships, as the women finish second and the men finish third overall. Cornerstone's women's team finished second for the second straight year, totaling 123.50 team points, while the men finish third with 120 team points. Cornerstone saw multiple All-WHAC winners as well, highlighted by freshman Malarie Pinwar winning the WHAC Newcomer of the Year. CU will now prepare for the NAIA National Championships in early March. 
 
Men's Results:
Men's action began in a big way with the 60m hurdles. Phoenix Velthouse recorded a new PR and a freshman record of 8.39 seconds. The mark fell just short of an NAIA Provisional Standard and moved him to second all-time in CU indoor program history. He finished sixth overall to earn three team points. Teammate Carter Sabin added a team point with his eighth-place finish time of 8.68 in the finals as well. 
 
In the men's mile, CU saw two athletes score. Nate Vruggink recorded a time of 4:21.34 to finish fifth and earn four team points. Logan Churchill added a new PR of 4:22.12 to finish seventh and add two additional points. 
 
In the men's 600m, Grayson VerBerkmoes returned from injury to be the top CU finisher with a mark of 1:26.64 and finish fifth. Kaleb Smith also scored a team point with an eighth-place finish and a new PR of 1:28.97 in the event. 
 
Seth Stoltz later went seven seconds flat in the 60m final to finish sixth and earn three CU team points. 
 
Grayson VerBerkmoes returned from injury to compete in the 600m. He finished fifth with a time of 1:26.64 while teammate Kaleb Smith recorded a PR of 1:28.97 to earn eighth as the duo added five team points. 
 
In the men's 800m, Spencer VanderZwagg scored four team points with a fifth-place finish of 1:59.34.
 
Multiple Golden Eagles would finish among the top eight in the men's 1000m. Nate Vruggink led the way finishing fourth with Andy Adams right behind him in fifth. Logan Churchill was seventh overall as well as the trio combined for 11 team points. 
 
Luke Pohl who took it easy on the weekend, competed in his first event late in the day on Saturday as he ran the 3000m. He cruised to the WHAC Championship with a time of 8:41.52 overall to add 10 more team points to the total. 
 
The running events ended with the men's 4x400. The crew of Jadyn Courtney, Seth Stoltz, Alexander Schmidt, and Josh DeVries combined for a time of 3:35.32 to finish third and give CU six more team points. 
 
The final men's event to score was the only field event of the day in the triple jump. Alexander Schmidt jumped a PR 13.39m to finish fourth overall, while Carter Sabin went 13.05m to earn fifth. 
 
Women's Results:
Braely Herrema opened the women's team action with a seventh-place finish in the 60m hurdle final. She finished with a time of 9.23 seconds to earn two team points. 
 
Next up was the women's mile. Anna Martin won the event with at ime just two seconds short of her PR of 5:01.30. The mark earned CU 10 team points and was another NAIA Auto Standard in the event. Freshman teammate Malarie Pinwar added a time of 5:11.83 to finish fourth overall for five more team points. 
 
Sarah Genzink in the very competitive field of the 400m beat her PR by .01 of a second to earn third overall. This added six team points to the team score, as she finished with a time of 59.81 in the event. 
 
Katelynn Dix continued her outstanding outing in the 60m finals with a time of 7.89 seconds to finish fifth in the event and earn four team points. Morgan Vargo also placed with a seventh-place mark of 7.97 to earn two additional team points. 
 
Freshman Lauren VanderLaan was the next to score for the Golden Eagles with a new PR in the 800m of 2:27.32. She finished fourth and scored five team points for CU. 
 
Next was Kori Baumann in the 1000m she crushed her PR by over three seconds with a mark of 3:08.10 to finish fifth and earn four team points. 
 
Katelynn Dix day was not done as she was again able to score with two team points and a seventh-place finish in the 200m of 26.57. 
 
The second-place team finish was secured on the women's side after the 3000m. Anna Martin won her second WHAC Championship of the day with a time of 10:17.45 and had freshman Malarie Pinwar right behind her for second with a time of 10:24.33. The two marks earned CU 18 team points to move them to 115.50 for the event. 
 
The night ended for the women in the 4x400. The crew of Sarah Genzink, Malarie Pinwar, Anna Martin, and Chelsee Martino combined for a time of 4:08.72 to earn second and grab eight more team points. 
 
What's Next?
Cornerstone begins preparations for the NAIA Indoor National Championships that will take place at the beginning of spring break in Brookings, South Dakota.
