BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Golden Eagles competed in four prelims on the first day of NAIA Indoor Nationals and saw two of the four events qualify for finals.
Luke Pohl, the NAIA National Championship favorite, cruised to a qualification in the 5k and the women's DMR finished the second fastest time in program history. CU has a busy day tomorrow starting at 1 p.m. EST for day two of NAIA Nationals.
Men's Results:
Right after the women's 5000m
Luke Pohl and
Colten Covington would run in the first heat of the men's 5000m. The NAIA National Champion favorite
Luke Pohl cruised to a 15:03.75 to finish second in the heat and earn a bid to the finals on Saturday.
Colten Covington ran a time of 15:17.84 coming off injury to place 11
th in his heat which was not enough to advance to the final.
The men's DMR struggled in heat three to end the night as
Nate Vruggink (3:05),
Josh DeVries (48.8),
Spencer VanderZwagg (1:55), and
Luke Pohl (4:20) combined for a time of 10:09.92 to finish sixth in their heat.
Women's Results:
NAIA Nationals action opened for the Golden Eagles with
Haley Nieuwkoop and
Cammie McConnell in the 5000m prelims. Nieuwkoop ran first and finished eighth in her heat with a time of 17:50.73. Waiting to see if that would qualify for finals, she watched
Cammie McConnell run a time of 18:34.94. Neither athlete would qualify for the finals as Nieuwkoop came two spots short of advancing.
The women's DMR crew of
Malarie Pinwar (3:40),
Sarah Genzink (0:56),
Kori Baumann (2:21), and
Anna Martin (4:56) closed out women's action with a dominant performance of 11:53.10. The time finished fifth overall and earned them a qualification to Saturday's final.

Cornerstone will see a busy day tomorrow with athletes competing from 1 p.m. through 5 p.m. EST in Brookings, S.D.
Nick Huynh and
Malarie Pinwar will lead things off with the men's weight throw final and the women's mile prelim at 1 p.m. EST.
