ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Baseball found itself playing against the top seeded team in the WHAC in Concordia as they split a pair of games in which they wish they had the second game back. Cornerstone won the first game thanks to offensive fire power 7-3 as Concordia would hit two late homeruns in game two to take it 7-6. It was a day that should have ended in two victories as the bats were rolling as Cornerstone hit five total homeruns for the day. The Golden Eagles now move to 15-20, 8-9 in the WHAC as they host Lawrence Tech on Friday, April 14 for a double-header starting at 1 p.m.
Game One Highlights – Cornerstone – 7 Concordia - 3
- There was no better way to start the game for the Golden Eagles as Andrew Meny led off the top of the first with a homerun over the left field fence. Cornerstone would add on another run thanks to a Matthew Kindley RBI single making it 2-0 after the top of the first. Dylan VandenBerg got the start for the Golden Eagles and worked around a one-out single to keep the Cardinals off the board.
- Cornerstone found some trouble in the bottom of the second as a sac bunt by the Cardinals cut into the Cornerstone lead. Yet with two outs, a walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases before Concordia would get a single that brought in two-runs as Concordia takes the 3-2 lead.
- Pitchers for Cornerstone and Concordia have settled in nicely after giving up some runs in the first two innings as the score remains 3-2 Concordia after the fifth inning.
- The first two-batters reached for the Golden Eagles and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch before Grant Young would come through with a single to take the 4-3 lead. Two-batters later Jordan Wenzel hits a homerun over the left field fence to extend Cornerstones lead 6-3.
- Jake Collin led off the seventh inning with homerun to give Cornerstone some breathing room making it 7-3. The Golden Eagles found themselves in trouble in the bottom of the seventh as Concordia had the tying run come to the plate before Josiah Stairs induced an inning ending double play to give Cornerstone the 7-3 game one victory.
Game Two Highlights – Concordia – 7 Cornerstone – 6 F/11
- Concordia struck first in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-out RBI single through the left side taking the 1-0 lead. Next batter for the Cardinals comes through with another RBI single as Concordia led 2-0 after the first.
- Cornerstone responded right away as Lucas Vega started the second inning with a single as Grant Young followed that up with a homerun over the left field fence to tie the game at two. With two-outs, two runners were on for Jake Collins as he comes through with a clutch hit through the left side to give Cornerstone the 3-2 lead after the top of the second.
- With two-outs in the bottom of the second, Concordia answered with an RBI single to tie the game at three as the runner would advance to second on the throw. Next batter would come through with a hit as Concordia would retake the lead 4-3 after the second inning.
- Jordan Wenzel came through for Cornerstone with a two-out double to tie the game 4-4 as both teams have found clutch hitting through the first three innings. Andrew Meny would follow Wenzel with a two-run homerun to retake the lead 6-4 after the top of the third.
- Brody Nelson came in for Cornerstone and has shut down the bats of Concordia as he thrown four shutout innings as Cornerstone still leads 6-4 heading into the eighth inning.
- Concordia answered with a run after the pitching change to make it 6-5 after the eighth inning. With two-outs in the bottom of the ninth, Concordia homered to tie the game to force extra innings.
- Concordia would walk-off Cornerstone on a homerun to split the double-header as they win game two 7-6.
