Grand Rapids, Mich. – Baseball comes away with a 1-1 day as they hosted Rochester Christian. Game one was highlighted by a final inning comeback to secure the 2-1 victory. In game two the Warriors came to life and put together a stronger game as they defeated the Golden Eagles 11-5. Cornerstone will travel to Defiance on Saturday, April 12 for a pair of games as they continue conference play.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 2 Rochester Christian – 1
- Mason Leckrone led off well from the mound for the Golden Eagles with two early strikeouts for the Golden Eagles.
- It took three innings for the first team to draw blood as the Warriors took a 1-0 lead thanks to consistent hits from all over the lineup.
- A back-and-forth defensive battle took us all the way to the bottom of the 7th inning with Rochester Christian still holding a 1-0 lead.
- Drew Goodman kicked off the inning with a double to center as the squad put together consistent at bats to put runners in scoring position.
- A Jack Gagliardi strike drove in the game tying run as Cornerstone looked to take this game.
- The Golden Eagles took advantage of a Warriors wild pitch that led to a walk off run which secured the game one victory.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 11 Rochester Christian – 5
- Cornerstone managed their way through the first inning without any damage despite seeing runners in scoring position.
- It was not the same story in the 2nd inning as Cornerstone surrendered three runs with sloppy defense telling the story.
- Michael Ruiz outpaced the Warriors defense with a bunt to kick off the bottom of the 3rd inning.
- The Golden Eagles tallied a run as they looked to inch closer to Rochester Christian thanks to a Luke Griffith single.
- The bats continued to stay hot for the Warriors as they found back-to-back runs to take a 5-1 lead in the top of the 4th.
- Jack Gagliardi and DJ Phillips both doubled to drive in a run for the Golden Eagles, yet they still trailed 5-2 at the bottom of the 4th.
- The bottom of the 6th inning belonged to Matthew Kindley who homered deep to right field to drive in three runs and tie the ball game at 5-5.
- The pitching struggles showed in the final few innings of the game as Rochester Christian was able to come away with a 11-5 victory in game two of the double-header.
By the Numbers:
2 – Each team saw one batter knock one out of the park in today's games.
13 – Cornerstone totaled 13 hits in the two contests.
6 – The Golden Eagles continue to look for their main man on the mound as we saw six different pitchers between both games.
