Auburndale, Fla. – Baseball closed out the Florida trip with two losses on the day. The Golden Eagles saw two good relief outings from
Jaden Franceschina and Jadyen both throwing two and a third scoreless innings in game two.
Drew Goodman Michael Ruiz led CU with four hits one the day
Corbin Westerkamp blasted a two-run homer in game one. The Golden Eagles begin conference play on Friday, March 13th as they head to Lima, Ohio to face UNOH for a doubleheader.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 5 John Melvin – 6
- After a quiet first inning, Cornerstone got on the board first with a two-run homer off the bat of Corbin Westerkamp to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
- John Melvin responded in the bottom of the third scoring on a wild pitch and a single.
- The Mangos added three more in the fourth off a walk and another single to extend their lead over CU to three.
- Cornerstone had an answer in the top half of the fifth as Michael Ruiz scored on an error by the catcher followed by a single off the bat of Broedy Dunham that drove in Andrew Eley.
- The Golden Eagles tied the game in the sixth as they loaded the bases and Andrew Eley walked to force in a run.
- John Melvin retook the lead in the bottom of sixth going up 6-5 and shut the door in the seventh setting CU down in order to end the game.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 0 Dickinson State – 8
- Both sides were held scoreless in inning number one, but Dickinson State brought seven runs across in the second on four hits and two errors to take a 7-0 lead.
- Jaden Franceschina took over the mound for CU going two and a third scoreless innings which was followed by another two and a third scoreless from Jayden Floyd to keep Cornerstone within seven.
- The Golden Eagles were able to get runners in scoring position including loading the bases in 6th but could not capitalize.
- Dickinson State brought in another run off a triple in the eight to extend their lead to eight.
- CU got a runner on in the ninth but couldn't get anything going dropping the final game in Florida 8-0.
