Winter Haven, Fla. – Baseball finished day three of their Florida trip splitting the doubleheader with Northwestern College.
Maddox Hatcher shined in game one striking out five while only allowing three hits in 6.2 innings of work to pick up his first win of the season. Game two saw both
Corbin Westerkamp and
Luke Griffith hit homeruns while
Christian Burgess struck out nine, but the Raiders would steal game two. The Golden Eagles continue play in the RussMatt Tournament on Tuesday, March 3rd as they face Morningside University for a doubleheader with the first game set for 9:15 a.m.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 3 Northwestern College (Iowa) – 2
- Both teams were held off the board in the first as Cornerstone would leave two on in the top half, but the Raiders went three up three down with two strikeouts by Maddox Hatcher.
- The Golden Eagles struck first as an error by the Northwestern first baseman brought two runs across to score.
- After a scoreless top of the third for CU, the Raiders got on the board with a homerun in the bottom half of the frame to make it a 2-1 game in favor of Cornerstone.
- After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning CU extended their lead as Andrew Meny singled to drive in Broedy Dunham which made it a 3-1 game in the top of the 6th.
- Northwestern would get one back in the seventh, but their rally was cut short as Andrew Meny threw out a runner at third to end the game a secure a 3-2 win for the Golden Eagles.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 2 Northwestern College (Iowa) – 5
- Northwestern jumped out to an early lead in game two getting a run across in the top of the first and held CU scoreless in the bottom half.
- The Golden Eagles answered quickly as Corbin Westerkamp led off the bottom of the second with a solo shot to left center tying the game at one.
- Both teams would be held off the board for through the next three innings with Christian Burgess striking out five in those innings.
- In the top of the sixth Northwestern added two runs off a single to take a 3-1 lead.
- CU responded in the bottom half as Luke Griffith blasted a no doubter over the right field fence which brought Cornerstone within one.
- The Raiders brought two more across to score in the top of the seventh and CU would go down in order as Northwestern took game two 5-2.
By the Numbers:
2 – Two Golden Eagles hit homeruns in game two of the doubleheader.
16– CU pitching staff had 16 total strikeouts on the day.
