Grand Rapids, Mich. – Softball secured the series sweep over cross-town rival Aquinas on Wednesday.
Anna Griffioen led CU with six hits and three RBIs on the day while
Kara Sandberg and
Grace Paling combined for 11 innings only giving up one earned run. The Golden Eagles continue their road trip as they head to Lima, Ohio to take on the Racers of the University of Northwestern Ohio on Friday, March 27th with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 9 Aquinas – 7
- The Saints got the scoring started in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.
- Cornerstone responded in the second as Kaylee Misialek doubled to drive in Paige Liddell and Taylor Zwagerman to give CU a 2-1 lead.
- The Golden Eagles added two more in the third as Morgan Jenkins and Maddi Miller doubled extending the CU lead to three.
- Aquinas retook the lead in the bottom half of the third scoring six runs on seven hits to take a 7-4 lead.
- CU cut the lead to two as Anna Griffioen singled in the fourth to bring Dylan Holmes across to score.
- In the top of the sixth CU regained the lead as Anna Griffioen singled followed by a double off the bat of Rylee Stephenson brought to across to make it an 8-7 game.
- Cornerstone added some insurance in the top of the seventh as Anna Griffioen tripled to drive in Alexis Ashbay and give CU a two-run lead.
- The Saints went down in order in the bottom half of the seventh to give CU a 9-7 win in game one.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 10 Aquinas – 2
- AQ got on the board first in the second scoring on a fielder's choice to take a 1-0 lead.
- After being held scoreless through four innings, CU broke out for five runs in the fifth as Sam Timmer walked in a run, followed by two scoring on an error. Adriana Sackett singled to drive in Timmer and Taylor Zwagerman scored on a wild pitch.
- The Saints responded with one run in the bottom half on an error.
- Cornerstone scored another five runs in the sixth off a double by Anna Griffioen and singles off the bats of Taylor Zwagerman and Kaylee Misialek to give CU a 10-2 lead and secure the game two win.
