Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Soccer drop their conference home opener 1-0 to Madonna on Saturday, September 19th. The match went into halftime scoreless with both teams battling hard. Madonna broke the deadlock with a goal in the 64th minute that would go on to be the winning goal.
Luke Philo made seven saves to keep CU close with
Isaac Kwantes leading the team with two shots. Men's Soccer will be back in action on Wednesday, September 23rd as they host Michigan-Dearborn with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 0 Madonna – 1
First Half:
- The match opened with a header shot by Isaac Kwantes in the first minute off a corner kick that went just wide left.
- After multiple fouls on both sides, Madonna attempted a shot which was blocked by a CU defender to keep the game scoreless.
- Justin Hirwa got loose on an opportunity in the 11th minute but missed the goal high.
- In the 22nd minute Isaac Kwantes fired a shot on goal, but the Madonna keeper made the save to keep it a 0-0 game.
- Luke Philo came up big between the 26th and 28th minutes, making three key saves to keep the match tied.
- In the 34th minute, Cornerstone was gifted a free kick at the top of the box as Madonna's keeper grabbed the ball out of the box earning a red card. Leading to a shot by Isaac Wood saved by the new Crusader keeper.
- Cornerstone closed out the first half with a shot by Lake Vander Ploeg that went wide right.
Second Half:
- The second half started with back-to-back shots by Madonna one high and the other blocked by a Golden Eagle defender.
- In the 53rd and 54th minute Luke Philo made two saves to keep the game knotted up at zero.
- Late in the 64th minute Madonna fired a shot on goal that was saved by Luke Philo, but the rebound was put into the back of the net to give Madonna a 1-0 lead.
- Following the goal both teams were issued cards with Seth Cambell being handed a red card for CU.
- Immediately following Luke Philo made another save to keep CU within one.
- Jadon Strawser sent a shot on goal in the 73rd minute that was saved by the Madonna keeper.
- In the 80th minute, Jadon Strawser fired another shot, but a Madonna defender blocked the shot as CU continued to trail 1-0.
- Stephen Jo Paul closed out the game with a shot that went high of the goal as Cornerstone fell to Madonna 1-0.
