CLERMONT, Fla. – The softball team opened the season with a tough 7-6 loss to Northwood University (Fla.) in extra innings. CU battled back from a 5-2 deficit to force extra innings but lost in the bottom of the eighth to the Seahawks. The second game of the double header was rained out. Cornerstone will face Grace College (Ind.) at 3:00 p.m. and Judson University (Ill.) at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
Game Flow
Hailey Castillo drew a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Harlie Sherman SAC fly in the 1st inning to give CU a 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles manufactured another run in the 2nd inning. Rachel Bode walked and advanced on a SAC bunt and then scored on a throwing error by NU's second baseman. The Seahawks exploded for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the 5th inning to take a 5-2 lead over Cornerstone. Jenna Weightman led off the top of the 7th with a single to start the rally. Hailey Castillo followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Harlie Sherman then reached on an error by the shortstop and both Weightman and Castillo scored to make it 5-4. Sherman scored later on another Seahawk error to tie the game 5-5. The Seahawks went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th so the teams went to extra innings. Cornerstone placed a runner on second base to start the 8th and advanced to third on a SAC bunt by Abby MacArthur and scored on a pass ball to give Cornerstone a 6-5 lead. The Seahawks placed their runner on second base as well and the Golden Eagles got the first two batters out but the next batted hit an RBI double to tie the game and that player later scored on an RBI single to win the game for Northwood.
