Baseball splits with Indiana Tech in WHAC opener

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Thanks to a late inning rally in the opener, the Cornerstone baseball team came away with a split against Indiana Tech on Friday afternoon in Fort Wayne. Ryan Harris (JR/Crystal Lake, Ill.) came in and got his second win of the year to help CU win 4-3 in the opener before the Warriors came away with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap. The two teams will meet Saturday for a pair of games starting at 1 p.m. at Warrior Field.

Game Flow

Game 1 – The Golden Eagles opened up a 3-0 lead after their at-bat in the fifth inning as they scored two in the fourth and added a single run in the fifth. Jordan Mobley (SR/Memphis, Tenn.) singled home Sonny Mastromatteo (SR/Ortonville, Mich.) to open the scoring and the Golden Eagles added to their lead on a Zach Bohl (JR/Hudsonville, Mich.) RBI groundout. CU then upped the lead to 3-0 on a Tommy Enslen (SR/Middleville, Mich.) single in the fifth.

The Warriors came back with two runs in the fifth and tied it up in the eighth to send the game to the final frame 3-3. CU then got the eventual game winner on a Jonny Abbadusky (SO/Elverson, Pa.) double that scored Dillon Reust (SR/Grand Ledge, Mich.) on the play. Harris came in for his second inning to nail down the win and improve to 2-0.

Game 2 – The bats that were pretty warm for each team in the first game became as cold as the weather as the two teams combined for just three runs on 11 hits. Indiana Tech struck first in the fourth before CU came back to tie it in the fifth when Sonny Mastromatteo singled home Dillon Reust.

That score held until the Warriors took the lead in the bottom of the sixth and then CU was unable to rally in their final at-bat falling 2-1.
