Softball team defeats Cleary and Roosevelt

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles played their first games in Grand Rapids this year over at Davenport against Cleary University and Roosevelt University.  Cornerstone coasted to a 9-1 win over Cleary in the first game.  Logan Myers (FR/Alpena, Mich.) powered the Golden Eagles attack going 2 for 4 with 3 RBI's and Rachel Nelson (JR/Grandville, Mich.) pitched a 4-hitter.  Myers had an even better game against Roosevelt going 3 for 4 with 5 RBI's.  Whitney Heasley (SO/Byron Center, Mich.) came in an closed the door to pick up the win for Cornerstone.  Cornerstone improves to 11-3 with the wins.



Game Flow

Game 1 – Cleary got on the board first with a couple of singles and a fielder's choice to go up 1-0 in the 1st inning.  The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the 3rd inning when Cornerstone tied it 1-1.  Jenna Weightman (SR/Greensburg, Pa.) drew a 2 out walk and scored on Harlie Sherman (JR/Centreville, Mich.)'s double to left field.  Cornerstone took the lead (2-1) much the same way in the bottom of the 4th inning.  Emily Bode (SO/Manton, Mich.) hit a 2 out single and scored on a Rachel Bode (JR/Manton, Mich.) double.  The Golden Eagle widened the gap in the bottom of the 5th inning scoring 4 runs.  Jenna Weightman led off with a solo shot to make it 3-1.  Harlie Sherman singled and came home on a Megan Oberst (SR/Tecumseh, Mich.) double.  Logan Myers hit an RBI single and Emily Bode lined out to bring home the last run of the inning to give Cornerstone a 6-1 lead.  Cornerstone added 3 more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.  Abby MacArthur (SO/Lachene, Mich.) reached on an error to start the 6thJenna Weightman walked to put runners on first and second base.  Both runners advanced on a pass ball.  Megan Oberst loaded the bases on a fielder's choice.  MacArthur scored on a pass ball and Logan Myers brought home the remaining two runners with a double.   Rachel Nelson went the distance in the circle to improve to 3-1.

 

Game 2 – The Golden Eagles got a great start against Roosevelt scoring four runs in the top of the 1st inning.  Harlie Sherman hit a double with one out.  Megan Oberst was hit by a pitch and Jessica Wright (FR/Jenison, Mich.) drew a walk to load the bases.  Logan Myers then cleared the bases with a single and advanced to third on an error by the lf.  Myers scored on a pass ball to make it 4-0. Roosevelt cut the lead in half with 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning and tied it with 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning.  Harlie Sherman got hit to lead off the 5th inning and advanced to second on a passed ball.  Logan Myers came up next and singled through the left side to reclaim the lead for Cornerstone.  Roosevelt responded in the bottom half of the inning with 4 runs powered by a 3-run dinger and went into the 6th inning with a 8-5 lead.  Cornerstone responded with five runs in the top of the 7th to reclaim the lead.  Jessica Wright singled and Logan Myers brought her home with a double.  Hailey Castillo (SR/Hamilton, Mich.) followed with a walk and Alexsandra Szajna (JR/Washington, Mich.) hit a 2-RBI double to tie the game 8-8.  Jenna Weightman brought in a run on an error and Harlie Sherman hit an RBI single to give Cornerstone a 10-8 lead.  Whitney Heasley closed Roosevelt out allowing just one hit in the bottom of the 7th inning.

What's Next

The Golden Eagles will take on Judson (4:00 p.m.) and Hillsdale (8:00 p.m.) at the Davenport Tournament.
