GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for Wednesday, the cross-town Panthers were too much for the Golden Eagles as they swept the pair of games 13-2 and 3-2. The pair of losses drops Cornerstone to 8-15 on the season and 1-5 in league action. CU will return to play on Friday and Saturday in a 4-game series at Madonna University.
Game Flow
Game 1 – The first inning was a sign of things to come for the Golden Eagles as they allowed three unearned runs all with two outs with the Panthers up to bat and CU tried to play catch up for the remaining innings. Cornerstone did bring across one run in their half of the second when Zach Bohl (JR/Hudsonville, Mich.) scored on a wild pitch.
Davenport, which moved up to No. 6 in the latest NAIA Top-25 poll earlier in the day, added three runs in the second and two in the third for a commanding 8-1 lead. The Golden Eagles did manage to get one more run in the top of the sixth when Bohl singled home Tommy Enslen (SR/Middleville, Mich.) but that is all they would get with DU winning by mercy 13-2 in seven innings.
Game 2 – The nightcap got off to a much better start for Cornerstone as they took a 2-0 lead in their half of the third on singles by Sonny Mastromatteo (SR/Ortonville, Mich.) and Tommy Enslen. Scoring on the plays were Jonny Abbadusky (SO/Elverson, Pa.) and Dillon Reust (SR/Grand Ledge, Mich.). DU countered in their at-bat in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs and then the Panthers took a 3-2 lead with a single run in the fourth.
That lead would be just enough for DU starter Jerry Ferris who moved to 4-0 on the year while Golden Eagle starter Aaron Pearson (SR/Manchester, Tenn.) suffered his first loss despite giving up just three runs on seven hits.
