LIVONIA, Mich. – Sophomore southpaw Ben Sheckler (SO/Sparta, Mich.) dazzled in the opening game at Madonna on Friday afternoon as he led the Golden Eagles to a split in the WHAC doubleheader. Cornerstone won the opener 2-0 before falling 4-0 in the nightcap. Both teams return to action on Saturday in another DH at Ilitch Ballpark.

Game Flow

Game 1 – With a first-pitch temperature below the freezing point, it became apparent quickly that runs would be at a  premium and with Ben Sheckler on the mound, the Golden Eagles posted an impressive 2-0 win. Sheckler went seven innings while allowing just four hits and three walks at the same time as striking out five.

CU did their damage at the plate in the fifth when Jordan Mobley (SR/Memphis, Tenn.) connected on one his two singles on the day to score Evan Wagner (SO/Port Huron, Mich.). The Golden Eagles added a single run in the sixth when Wagner singled home Tommy Enslen (SR/Middleville, Mich.) and that was all the run support Sheckler needed. Ryan Harris (JR/Crystal Lake, Ill.) came on the final two frames to pick up the 6-out save.

Game 2 – The hitting continued to be scarce in the nightcap but the home Crusaders struck first with a pair of runs in the opening frame. The Cornerstone bats were quieted after getting nine hits in the opener as the Golden Eagles only finished with three in the second.

Madonna added single runs in the third and the fifth innings as their pitching staff (five pitchers in total) only allowed a total of five base-runners.
