AUBURNDALE, Fla. – After mustering just two runs in the opener against No. 22 Point Park, the Cornerstone baseball team exploded for 13 in the nightcap to post a series split with the Pioneers. Luke Heller (SR/Whitewater, Wisc.) got the win on the bump in game two that was highlighted by a 2-run inside the park homerun by Evan Wagner (SO/Port Huron, Mich.). The split leaves the Golden Eagles at 5-8 on the season as they return to action Friday with a pair of games.
Game Flow
Game 1 – Point Park starter Jarrad Brown had his way with the CU lineup as the junior finished off his complete game by only allowing a pair of runs on four hits.
The Pioneers, which came into the week ranked No. 22 in the latest NAIA Top-25 poll, went to work in the top half of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead but the Golden Eagles fought right back to tie it in the bottom on a Tommy Enslen (SR/Middleville, Mich.) RBI single scoring Aaron Pearson (SR/Manchester, Tenn.).
Point Park then scored the next five runs before an Enslen solo shot in the seventh to bring the Golden Eagles to within four but it was not enough as CU fell 6-2.
Game 2 – The bats which were so quiet in the opener, came alive in the nightcap as Cornerstone scored the most runs in a single game of the young season to win 13-7. CU again fell behind early as PPU scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first but Cornerstone brought home four in the second and five more in the third for a commanding 9-2 lead.
The lead grew to 10 with a 4-run seventh inning and then CU held off a late charging Pioneer team to take the game by the final of 13-7. Highlighting the win was a 2-run inside the park homerun from Evan Wagner in the third inning that scored Tommy Enslen.
