Box Score 2 Saint Thomas Box | Point Park Box | Video Highlights
CLERMONT, Fla. – Cornerstone picked up a pair of wins on Thursday afternoon as they posted a season high 11 runs in the opener over Saint Thomas and then held off Point Park in eight innings to win 8-7 in the nightcap. The two victories lift the Golden Eagles' record to 5-3 on the season as they will play Bethel (Ind.) and Spring Arbor on Friday.
Game Flow
Game 1 – Having the day off before helped the Golden Eagles from the start as they jumped out to a 9-0 lead after one and added a 10th run in the second for the commanding lead. Highlighting the 9-run first was the first career homerun off the bat of freshman Logan Myers (FR/Alpena, Mich.) and a 2-out 2-RBI double from Jenna Weightman (SR/Greensburg, Pa.).
Weightman picked up another RBI in the second when she scored Alexandra Szajna and the CU scoring was finished in the 6th when another freshman, Jessica Wright (FR/Jenison, Mich.), matched Myers with her first collegiate homerun. Saint Thomas did manage to extend the game after trailing 10-0 heading into the fifth as the Bobcats scored five times to cut the score in half. Freshman Brooke Leonard (FR/Zeeland, Mich.) finished off the win with a 1-2-3 7th to improve to 2-1 on the year.
Game 2 – Cornerstone saw their offense again jump out in front with three quick runs in the top of the first but Point Park showed grit in fighting back and it was a sign of things to come. After seeing the Pioneers tie it up, CU then re-took the lead with a single run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take a 6-3 lead.
With two outs in the seventh, Cornerstone had an error that allowed the bases to be cleared to tie the score and the game went into extras. CU then re-took the lead in the eighth with a pair of runs and held off a final Pioneer rally to win 8-7.
