Softball sweeps Crossroads League foes

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Golden Eagles have been on both sides of playing softball outdoors.  Today they faced Spring Arbor who was playing their first game of the season as their spring break starts this week.  Cornerstone jumped out to a big lead early and coasted to an 11-3 win over the Cougars.  Powered by home runs by Harlie Sherman and Jessica Wright, the Golden Eagles scored 11 runs on 10 hits in the win.  Both Sherman and Wright had 3 RBI's in the game.  Cornerstone defeated Bethel (Ind.) 13-12 in a shootout in the second game of the day.  Emily Bode went 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 3RBI's to lead the Golden Eagles attack.  Jessica Wright and Megan Oberst both had 2 hits and 2 RBI's each in the win.



Game Flow

Game 1Jenna Weightman greeted the Cougars with a lead-off double to get things started.  Hailey Castillo followed with a single and both scored on an error by the right field who misplayed a Harlie Sherman fly ball.  Sherman advanced to third on the play and scored on a Logan Myers SAC fly.  Jessica Wright and Alexsandra Szajna both drew walks and Wright scored on an Abby MacArther single to make it 4-0 in the 1st inning. Jessica Wright hit an RBI triple in the 2nd inning to give Cornerstone a 5-0 lead.  The Golden Eagles exploded with four more runs in the 3rd inning.  Harlie Sherman hit a 3-run shot and Caitlyn Hartline had an RBI single for Cornerstone.  Spring Arbor got two back in the bottom of the 4th and one more in the 5th inning to make 9-3.  Jessica Wright hit a 2-run shot in the top of the 6th and the Brooke Leonard struck out the side in the bottom of the 6th inning to secure the win for Cornerstone.

Game 2 – Harlie Sherman, Megan Oberst, and Jessica Wright hit consecutive singles and all scored via fielder choice, hit batter, and a couple of walks.  Logan Myers reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch to give Cornerstone a 4-1 advantage after the first inning.  The Pilots tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the 4th inning but the Golden Eagles extended the lead back to 9-4 in the bottom half of the inning.  Caitlyn Hartline led off with a single and advanced to third base on a wild pitch and passed ball and scored on a Emily Bode single.  Jenna Weightman followed with a triple to plate Bode.  Harlie Sherman brought Weightman home with a single.  Megan Oberst reached on an error and both her an Sherman scored on a Jessica Wright single to make it 9-4.  Bethel responded in the top of the 5th inning with two runs of their own to make it 9-6 in the game.  Cornerstone responded once again in the bottom of the 5thEmily Bode led a solo shot to make it 10-6.  Jenna Weightman reached on an error and Harlie Sherman single to put runners on first and second.  Megan Oberst hit a 2 RBI double to make it 12-6 plating Weightman and Sherman.  Bethel got another run in the top of the 6thEmily Bode hit an RBI single to keep the margin at six (13-7) in the bottom of the 6th.  Bethel exploded for five runs in the top of the 7th but Whitney Heasley came in an got the last batter to line out to end the game.

What's Next

Cornerstone will take on Trinity International (Ill.) and Spring Arbor tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to finish up their games in Florida. .
