WYOMING, Mich. – The momentum entering the week was at its peak for the season after splitting a series at Madonna but the Cornerstone Baseball team fell victim to some timely hitting from cross-town foe Aquinas College as they fell in both games of the doubleheader 8-6 and 6-3. The pair of setbacks drops the Golden Eagles to 10-19 on the year and 3-9 in league play. CU will welcome No. 23 Northwestern Ohio to DeWitt Field on Friday and Saturday for a four game series.
Game Flow
Game 1 – Jonny Abbadusky (SO/Elverson, Pa.) got the scoring started in the top of the first as the sophomore led the game off with a walk, advanced to second and then stole third before coming home on a wild pitch. That lead only held until the bottom of the second when the Saints brought across three runs for a 3-1 lead.
CU chipped away at the lead with a single run in the fourth on a Jordan Mobley (SR/Memphis, Tenn.) ground out and then the Golden Eagles tied it up on a Mobley three-run homerun to right field. Again the lead only held for one half inning as AQ put up two in the bottom of the sixth and then tacked on another in the seventh for the eventual 8-6 win.
Game 2 – Needing a win to post a series split on the road, Cornerstone got off to a great start as they scored three runs in the first three innings highlighted by a Dalton Reust (SR/Grand Ledge, Mich.) 2-run shot to left-field. Aquinas, like they had done all day though, came back with a 3-run bottom of the third and then added three more in the next frame all unearned.
The three runs were the difference in the nightcap as Aquinas went on to win 6-3.
