Softball team swept by UM-Dearborn

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles got swept by UM-Dearborn today by the score of 7-9 and 4-9.  Cornerstone had the lead early in both games but the Wolverines rallied with a 14 runs in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings of both games to go on to sweep the Golden Eagles.  Cornerstone drops to 12-6 overall and 0-2 in the WHAC.

 

Game Flow

Game 1 – The Golden Eagles got a quick start against the Wolverines of UM-Dearborn today scoring two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning.  Jenna Weightman drew a walk and stole second base and scored on a Jessica Wright single to make it 1-0.  Harlie Sherman hit a single and scored on an error for the second run of the inning.  The Wolverines got one back in the top of the 3rd inning to make it 2-1 and the game remained that way through the 4th inning.  UM-Dearborn picked up four runs in the top of the 5th inning to take a 5-2 lead.  Cornerstone got two back in the bottom half of the inning.  It was almost a replay of the 1st inning.   Jenna Weightman walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Jessica Wright single.   Megan Oberst had drawn a walk before Wright's single and later scored on an error to make it 5-4.  The Golden Eagles took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the 6th inning with two runs from an Ashley Niedermayer 2-run homer.  UM-Dearborn reclaimed the lead in the top of the 7th inning with two runs.  Cornerstone tied it 7-7 with a bases loaded walk to Alexsandra Szajna.  Neither team scored in the 8th inning but the Wolverines picked up two in the top of the 9th inning to go on to the 9-7 win in Game 1.  Jessica Wright went 2 for 3 with two RBI.

 

Game 2 – Cornerstone started much the same as game 1 scoring two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning powered by a 2-run blast by Megan Oberst.  UM-Dearborn responded with three runs in the top of the 3rd inning to take a 3-2 lead.  The Wolverines added four more in the top of the 4th inning to take a commanding 7-2 lead.  Cornerstone got two back in the bottom half of the inning. 

Hailey Castillo lead off with a single to the catcher.  She advanced to third on a pop out.  Ashley Niedermayer and Jenna Weightman walked to load the bases.  Castillo scored on a wild pitch and Harlie Sherman got an RBI single to bring home Ashley Niedermayer to make it a 7-4 game.  The Wolverines added two more in the top of the 5th inning to go up 9-4.  They shut the Golden Eagles out in the 5th inning and the game was called due to darkness after the 5th inning with UM-Dearborn winning 9-4.

Jessica Wright, Megan Oberst, and Ashley Niedermayer all had two RBI on the day.

 

What's Next

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host Indiana Tech at 1:00 p.m.
