GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles faced a tough pitcher in Emily Maves this afternoon and Maves got the best of the CU line-up pitching a perfect game in the first game and coming in to earn the win in the second game as well. Cornerstone figured the starting pitcher in the second game scoring 4 runs on 6 hits against Alyssa Eastman but it was not enough to catch the Panthers in a 9-7 loss.
Game Flow
Game 1 – Davenport scored two runs in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead over Cornerstone. The Panthers scored another run in the 3rd inning and added three more in the bottom of the 4th inning to make it 8-0. Cornerstone didn't score in the top of the 5th and the game ended at 8-0.
Game 2 – The Golden Eagles fared much better in the second game. Davenport picked up a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning to take the lead but Cornerstone scored three runs in top of the 4th inning to take their first lead of the day. Hailey Castillo singled to lead off the inning and stole second. Harlie Sherman hit a single to advance Castillo to third. Castillo scored on a SAC fly by Emily Bode. Logan Myers drew a walk and Rachel Bode reached on an error to bring Sherman home. Ashley Niedermayer followed with a double to score Myers.
Cornerstone added three more in the 5th inning as Jenna Weightman led off with a single and advanced to second and third base on errors. Emily Bode brought Weightman home with a single to the pitcher. Logan Myers reached on an error to score Castillo. Ashley Niedermayer hit a SAC fly to bring in the third run of the inning to give Cornerstone a 6-1 lead. The Panthers struck right back scoring 7 runs on 6 hits in the 5th inning to claim an 8-6 lead. Davenport increased the lead to 9-6 with a run in the 6th inning. Cornerstone mounted a rally in the bottom of the 7th but could only put one run on the board with 3 hits. Alexsandra Szajna hit an RBI single for the run.
