Heller’s strong outing lifts Baseball team to split

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone got a great performance from senior Luke Heller (SR/Whitewater, Wisc.) in the opener as the Golden Eagles posted a split against Concordia on Friday evening. CU won game one 6-2 before falling 11-3 in the nightcap. The split leaves Cornerstone at 17-26 overall and 8-16 in the WHAC. Both teams will return to DeWitt Field on Saturday at 2 p.m. for a doubleheader.



Game Flow

Game 1Luke Heller was dominant on the mound for the Golden Eagles and came within one out of throwing the first complete game (9-innings) since CU re-started the baseball program in 2013. Heller finished the day going 8.2 innings while allowing seven hits and two runs.

Cornerstone backed Heller's impressive day on the mound as they brought home four runs in the fourth and two in the sixth. Zach Bohl (JR/Hudsonville, Mich.) posted a 3-3 day while Jonny Abbadusky (SO/Elverson, Pa.) and Aaron Pearson (SR/Manchester, Tenn.) each had a pair of hits. Abbadusky knocked in two runs as well.


Game 2 – Game two started out well for the visiting Cardinals as they took their first lead of the day in the opening at-bat but Cornerstone responded with RBI singles from Tommy Enslen (SR/Middleville, Mich.) and Aaron Pearson to take the lead at 2-1. CU pushed it to a 2-run lead but then Concordia exploded for 10 runs in the next five innings for a commanding 11-3 lead.

CU did put runners on in the final inning but could not get any across eventually falling 11-3.

What's Next
Cornerstone will host the Cardinals again on Saturday in a WHAC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
