Weightman's walk off helps CU split with Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone returned to action today to face rival Aquinas and the Golden Eagles won game one on a walk-off homerun by Jenna Weightman.  Aquinas won the second game 7-0 and limited Cornerstone to just four hits in the game. The split leaves Cornerstone at 15-11 overall and 3-7 in league play as they travel to Siena Heights on Saturday for a DH.



Game Flow

Game 1 – Aquinas started the game with a lead-off double and scored on a single to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning.  Cornerstone responded in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score at 1-1.  Hailey Castillo walked, stole second, and scored on an Ashley Niedermayer double.  The game remained 1-1 until the bottom of the 8th inning.  Jenna Weightman led off the 8th inning with a solo shot over the left field fence to give Cornerstone a 2-1win over the Saints.  Brooke Leonard scattered 9 hits to pick up the win in the circle.

 

Game 2 – The Saints started the second game much like the first scoring a run in the top of the 1st inning.  They scored two runs each in the 3rd and 4th to go up 5-0.  They scored another run in the top of the 5th inning and then one more in the top of the 7th to take a commanding 7-0 lead.  Harlie Sherman had two of Cornerstone's four hits in the game.  Rachel Nelson took the loss for Cornerstone.

Harlie Sherman went 3 for 6 from the plate with an RBI for the Golden Eagles.

 

What's Next

Cornerstone will travel down to Adrian to take on Siena Heights tomorrow.  The first pitch will be at 1:00 p.m
