GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The final games of the weekend brought a split for the Golden Eagle baseball team as they fell 5-4 in the opener to Concordia but rallied to win game two 6-2. The split leaves CU at 18-27 on the year and 9-17 in league play. Cornerstone will stay at home on Wednesday for a doubleheader against cross-town foe Aquinas. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
Game Flow
Game 1 – Aaron Pearson led off the 2nd inning with a single and then he stole second. Evan Wagner followed with an RBI single up the middle to give Cornerstone the 1-0 lead. The Cardinals responded immediately with two runs on three hits in the top of the 3rd inning. Pearson started things up in the 4th inning as well leading off with a double. He scored later on a Dillon Reust fielder's choice to tie the game at 2-2. The Cardinals reclaimed the lead with single runs in the 5th and 6th innings.
Dillon Reust led off the 7th inning with a solo shot over the left field fence to make it 3-4 and Aaron Pearson hit a 2-out solo shot in the 8th to tie the game at 4-4. Unfortunately the Cardinals burst the Golden Eagles bubble in the top of the 9th with a couple of single's to go up 5-4. Cornerstone got runners on first and second in the bottom of the 9th but failed to get them any further and Concordia claimed the victory.
Game 2 – Concordia started well in game two scoring a run on a couple of singles in the top of the first inning. Neither team would score again until the bottom of the 5th inning. Evan Wagner led off with a single and advanced to second on a SAC bunt. Jonny Abbadusky doubled to left center to drive in Wagner. Abbadusky stole third and scored on an error to give Cornerstone a 2-1 lead but the Golden Eagles weren't finished. Aaron Pearson hit an RBI double and then scored on a Zach Bohl single to put Cornerstone up 4-1.
Tommy Enslen capped off the inning with an RBI single to give Cornerstone a commanding 5-1 lead. Jonny Abbadusky walked and scored on a Sonny Mastromatteo SAC fly in the 6th inning for a 6-1 lead. The Cardinals got one back in the top of the 7th but Jon Knapp buckled down and struck out the final to batters to seal the 6-2 victory for Cornerstone.
