GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Entering a very crucial part of their schedule with the WHAC playoffs on the line, Cornerstone got a pair of stellar pitching performances today from Luke Heller (SR/Whitewater, Wisc.) and Ben Sheckler (SO/Sparta, Mich.) as they picked up a doubleheader sweep of Aquinas. CU won the opener 3-2 before shutting out the Saints 5-0 in the nightcap. The pair of wins lift Cornerstone to 20-27 on the season and 11-17 in league play. CU heads to Lourdes for a 4-game series Friday and Saturday in Sylvania, Ohio.
Game Flow
Game 1 – Luke Heller was dominant on the mound for the Golden Eagles as it marked the second consecutive game he went at least eight innings. Heller finished the day with just two runs allowed on 10 hits, while striking out three. The offense backed him with a 2-spot in the second and the eventual game winner in the seventh.
Cornerstone got the scoring started when Evan Wagner (SO/Port Huron, Mich.) led off the second with one of his three hits in the game and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt from Zach Bohl (JR/Hudsonville, Mich.). Dillon Reust (SR/Grand Ledge, Mich.) then tripled home Wagner to score the first run of the game and was later brought home on a SAC fly from Adam Harvey (FR/Antioch, Ill.). CU picked up the game winning run in the seventh after Jonny Abbadusky (SO/Elverson, Pa.) stole second and third and was brought home on a SAC fly from Aaron Pearson (SR/Manchester, Tenn.).
Game 2 – For as dominant as Heller was in the first game, Ben Sheckler was just as impressive as the sophomore southpaw went the distance while allowing just two hits and four total base runners. CU backed him with two runs in the second, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
After a Sonny Mastromatteo (SR/Ortonville, Mich.) triple to lead off the second, Tommy Enslen (SR/Middleville, Mich.) picked up one of his three RBI in the game to open the scoring for Cornerstone. Enslen was later brought home on a single from Dillon Reust. After the Golden Eagles added a single run in the fourth, Enslen connected on a 2-run double in the fifth to increase the margin to 5-0 as he brought home Dalton Reust (SR/Grand Ledge, Mich.) and Aaron Pearson.
