GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Cornerstone baseball opened up a 17-game home-stand on Friday afternoon and pushed the No. 23 ranked Northwestern Ohio Racers but fell in a pair of close games 8-5 and 3-2 in extra innings. The pair of losses drop the Golden Eagles to 10-21 on the year and 3-11 in league play. Both teams will play a second doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

Game Flow

Game 1 – The visiting Racers, who were ranked No. 23 coming into the day, got on top early with a pair of runs in the opening frame but Cornerstone struck back with four of their own in the bottom of the first. CU got hits from Jonny Abbadusky (SO/Elverson, Pa.), Sonny Mastromatteo (SR/Ortonville, Mich.), Evan Wagner (SO/Port Huron, Mich.) and Zach Bohl (JR/Hudsonville, Mich.) to plate the runs and take a 4-2 lead.

That lead would be short-lived as UNOH scored four in the next inning and then added two more in the fourth for an 8-4 lead. CU did get within three when Jordan Mobley (SR/Memphis, Tenn.) picked up an RBI ground out scoring Enslen in the seventh but the Racers held on for the 8-5 win.

Game 2 – UNOH got the upperhand in the nightcap when they scored a pair of runs with two outs in the third inning and their pitcher, Ryan Petrangelo was solid on the mound as he allowed only five baserunners through the first five innings. CU struck even in the bottom of the sixth when Sonny Mastromatteo connected on a 2-RBI single that scored Dalton Reust (SR/Grand Ledge, Mich.) and Jonny Abbadusky

CU then threatened in the bottom of the eighth but the UNOH closer came in to shut the Golden Eagles down. The Racers then got what would be the winning run in the top of the ninth after a critical error allowed their runner to move into scoring position.
