GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles secured a spot in the WHAC playoffs by sweeping the Saints of Siena Heights 3-0 and 4-3 (8 innings) today. The wins give Cornerstone a chance to finish as high as 5th place in the conference as they will play two final regular season games against the Saints on Friday with the first pitch of game one set for 2 p.m.
Game Flow
Game 1 – The Golden Eagles started well today getting a run in the bottom of the 1st inning on three consecutive singles by Sonny Mastromatteo, Aaron Pearson, and Zach Bohl. Bohl was credited with an RBI on his hit. Both teams played shut out baseball for the next six innings featuring some good defensive plays by both teams. Jonny Abbadusky made a great play robbing Siena Heights of a potential home run in the top of the 6th inning to keep the game at 1-0. Cornerstone added a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th inning. A
aron Pearson hit a 1-out double over the center fielder's head and Zach Bohl followed with his second RBI single of the game to put Cornerstone up 2-0. Evan Wagner followed him with a infield single deep to the third baseman to put runners on first and second. Dalton Reust hit an RBI single to give Cornerstone a 3-0 cushion going into the final inning. Senior pitcher Matt Heller retired the side in the top of the 9th to pitch a 4-hit shutout and improved to 5-3 on the season. Cornerstone improved to 15-18 in the WHAC and 24-28 overall.
Game 2 – The Golden Eagles started game 2 much the same as game 1. Aaron Pearce hit a single, stole second and scored on a Zach Bohl single. Cornerstone scored another run in the 2nd inning. Dalton Reust hit a single, advanced to second on a Jon Stewart bunt single, and then scored on a Jonny Abbadusky single. The Golden Eagles scored again in the 3rd inning. Zach Bohl was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a Jordan Mobley ground out. Dillon Reust brought him home on a double down the left field line to put Cornerstone up 3-0. Ben Sheckler looked to be cruising but ran into trouble in the top of the 4th inning.
The Saints scored 2 runs on 2 hits to reduce the lead to 3-2 in the 4th and tied the game 3-3 with a run in the top of the 5th inning. The game remained 3-3 until the bottom of the 8th. Dalton Reust came to bat with a runners on 2nd and 3rd and two outs and beat out a grounder to bring home the winning run to give Cornerstone a 4-3 win.
Cornerstone improves to 25-28 overall and 16-18 in the WHAC. Cornerstone secured a spot in the WHAC playoffs for the first time since restarting the program with the sweep.
