Martin's walk off salvages split with Siena Heights

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles were able to play many of their seniors today since they wrapped up a playoff spot with the sweep of Siena Heights last night but both team still came to play today even though the result wouldn't affect the playoff situation.  The Saints captured game one with two runs in the 11th inning and the Golden Eagles won the second game in the 8th inning with a walkoff hit by Davis Martin.  Cornerstone finishes the regular season with a 26-29 overall record and a mark of 17-19 in the WHAC.  Cornerstone will play at the WHAC Tournament hosted by Siena Heights on Monday.  Check the website for the seed and time of game later.



Game Flow

Game 1 – The Golden Eagles dug a bit of a hole today giving up 2 runs in the 2nd inning and single runs in both the 3rd and 4th innings as Siena Heights built a 4-0 lead after four innings of play.  The Golden Eagles made up all of those runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.  Jonny Abbadusky led off the 6th with a single.  Sonny Mastromatteo walked to put runners on first and second.  Aaron Pearson singled to bring Abbadusky home.  Jordan Mobley tied the game with one swing of the bat launching a 3-run homer over the right field fence to tie the game at 4-4.  The Golden Eagles took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the 7th inning. 

 

Zach Bohl hit a double down the left field line and scored on a Sonny Mastromatteo double down the right field line.  Aaron Pearson followed him with a single to bring Mastromatteo to the plate.  The Saints reclaimed the lead in the top of the 8th inning scoring 3 runs to make it 7-6.  Cornerstone tied it 7-7 in the bottom of the 9th on an Aaron Pearson RBI single to send it to extra innings.  The Saints scored 2 runs in the top of the 11th inning and shut the Golden Eagles out in the bottom of the inning to win the game 9-7.

Game 2 – Siena Heights got it going early in the second game scoring 2 runs on 2 hits in the top of the 1st inning.  Cornerstone cut that lead in half in the bottom of the inning.  Jonny Abbadusky led off with a single and advanced to second on a Jon Stewart walk.  Zach Bohl kept up his hot hitting and drove in Abbadusky with a single to right field.  The Saints picked up another run in the top of the 4th inning to make it 3-1.  Cornerstone tied the game with 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. 

Zach Bohl led off with a single followed by consecutive singles by Evan Wagner and Dillion Reust to load the bases.  Dalton Reust hit a ground out to bring in one runner and Sonny Mastromatteo lined out to right field to bring in the tying run.  The game remained tied at 3-3 until the bottom of the 8th inning when Davis Martin hit a walk off over the center fielder's head to bring home Dillon Reust for the win.

What's Next

Cornerstone will advance to the WHAC tournament at Siena Heights to be played on Monday.  Seed and time will be announced later by the WHAC.
