AVON PARK, Fla. – Cornerstone went 1-1 on the day recording a 12-3 upset win against No. 12 Bellevue and falling 4-3 to Mount Vernon Nazarene in a game that came down to the last pitch. The Golden Eagles hold a 3-12 record now as they will play their final game in Florida tomorrow before heading back home to play a double header against Rochester College on Wednesday.
Game Flow
Game 1 – The Golden Eagles got into a back and fourth battle with the Cougars as neither team had a lead of more than one run throughout the game. MVNU got on the board first off a home run by Yanni Patten that gave them a 1-0 lead but Cornerstone bounced right back with a Brady Volmering (SO/Harbor Beach, Mich.) double and a Jacob Klemme (SR/Plymouth, Wis.) single that gave CU the 2-1 lead in the second inning. After Mount Vernon tied it back up at two, Klemme hit a deep solo home run to take the lead again at 3-2.
Kyle Marburger (SR/Peru, Ind.) did not receive the help he needed to get the win though as an error in right field gave the Cougars the lead back in the sixth inning at 4-3. Cornerstone had the opportunity to walk off with the win but after loading the bases but were unable to come up with the big hit.
Game 2 – Cornerstone got going early offensively against No. 12 Bellevue as the Golden Eagles scored three first inning runs off a 2-RBI Jacob Klemme double and a Travis Gordon (SR/Lowell, Mich.) ground out that scored Klemme. Bellevue responded in the third inning with their only runs of the game off of Ben Sheckler (JR/Sparta, Mich.) recording two singles that scored three runners tying the game at 3-3.
Ben Sheckler dominated the rest of the Bruins lineup though as he pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts, and received the run support he needed as a two run home run by Adam Harvey (SO/Antioch, Ill.) gave the Golden Eagles the lead at 5-3. CU continued to add on to the lead in the fifth and sixth inning as Harvey had another RBI off of a single that scored Travis Gordon that highlighted the seven runs in two innings that brought the final to 12-3.
