GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The home opener for the Cornerstone softball team brought a split against the visitors from Olivet College as CU won the nightcap 3-0 after falling 11-3 in the opener. The split leaves the Golden Eagles at 6-8 overall as they will resume action on Friday when they host Kalamazoo College at Noon. Both of the games of the doubleheader can be seen live on the Golden Eagle Sports Network.
Game Flow
Game 1 – Cornerstone got out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Logan Myers (SO/Alpena, Mich.) walked and she was followed by three consecutive singles from Mackenzie Vallad (FR/Rockford, Mich.), Elizabeth Albaugh (JR/Shepherd, Mich.) and Rachel Bode (SR/Manton, Mich.). The offense then stalled as went down in order for the next two frames.
CU pitcher Rachel Nelson (SR/Grandville, Mich.) started strong as well and after three innings, had six strikeouts but the Comets finally got to her in the fourth as they brought across four runs. CU did get one back on an Alex Szajna single that scored Caitlyn Hartline (JR/Marcellus, Mich.) but the Comets broke out the bats again in the fifth to increase their lead to 11-3. CU was unable to score in the bottom half, ending game one via a mercy.
Game 2 – Cornerstone again got off to a solid start as they took the 1-0 lead after the third inning when Logan Myers singled and was later brought home on a double from Elizabeth Albaugh. That was more than enough runs for CU starter Brooke Leonard (SO/Zeeland, Mich.) as she limited the Comets to just three hits while striking out three batters.
The Golden Eagles got some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when Jessica Wright (SO/Jenison, Mich.) hit a 2-run homerun scoring Caitlyn Hartline to put CU up 3-0 and that was how it would finish with Rachel Younts (FR/Holton, Mich.) picking up her first career save.
