Baseball closes series with Madonna with pair of losses

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles struggled with the bats again on Saturday as they dropped a pair of close contests with the visiting Crusaders of Madonna University. CU fell 5-2 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap to fall to 7-16 overall and 1-3 in league play. CU will play at No. 22 Davenport on Wednesday as they resume WHAC play at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader.

Game Flow
Game 1 – Cornerstone got off to a strong start in the opening frame as Davis Martin (SR/Powell, Ohio.) singled home Zach Bohl (SR/Hudsonville, Mich.) to put them up 1-0. That lead held until the fourth inning when the long ball haunted the Golden Eagles s the Crusaders connected on a 3-run shot to go up 3-1.

MU would add to that lead in the next inning with a single run only to see CU cut it in half in the bottom of the sixth when Aaron Krupansky (FR/Hartland, Mich.) singled home Jonny Abbadusky (JR/Elverson, Pa.) but that would be the last scoring as Madonna added one more of their own for the final tally of 5-2.

Game 2 – Madonna got on the board first in the nightcap as they brought across a pair of runs on a single to right field in which a mishap by the CU defender led to the second run. Cornerstone quickly responded with a sac fly off the bat of Levi Martin (FR/Vicenza, Italy) in the fourth inning.

After a homer by the Crusaders put them back up by two, Cornerstone again cut the margin to just one when Zach Bohl took a bases loaded walk after a single from Abbadusky, a walk from Travis Gordon (SR/Lowell, Mich.) and a single from Stewart.

The Golden Eagles will return to conference play on Wednesday when they travel to No. 22 Davenport for a 2 p.m. DH against the Panthers.
