LAKELAND, Fla. – The Golden Eagles got their first win of the 2016 season with a split against Southeastern to begin the week long trip in Florida. CU got the victory off a strong pitching performance by ace Ben Sheckler (JR/Sparta, Mich.) and a clutch base running play by Aaron Krupansky (FR/Hartland, Mich.). Cornerstone is now 1-7 as they will pick resume play in Babson Park against Ave Maria University on Monday March 7th.

Game Flow

Game 1 – Cornerstone got off to a slow start batting, but received a spark when Levi Martin (FR/Vicenza, Italy) came in to hit a fifth inning double that scored Nate SIlvey to cut the lead to 2-1. The hitting continued as Brady Volmering (SO/Harbor Beach, Mich.) singled to advance Jonny Abbadusky (JR/Elverson, Pa.), and then Zach Bohl (SR/Hudsonville, Mich.) hit a sac fly to score him giving the Golden Eagles a 3-2 lead. Southeastern then tied it back up with a sac fly of their own by Derek Martin to make it 3-3. CU responded though in the seventh as Bohl grounded into a fielder's choice and Aaron Krupansky took off from third and beat the tag at home to make it 4-3.

Ben Sheckler held the 4-3 lead on the mound as he pitched a complete game for the second straight appearance. Sheckler showed his dominance in the win as well, recording 13 strikeouts through seven innings of play and only walking one Southeastern batter.

Game 2 Kyle Marburger (SR/Peru, Ind.) pitched game two and got off to a slow start as well giving up a three run homer in the first inning. Marburger did bounce back to have a solid performance as he pitched 4.2 innings, gave up four hits while striking out four.

Batting was an issue for the Golden Eagles in game two as they could only record two hits through the first five innings of play. The only run for Cornerstone came in the seventh to bring the final score to 13-1, but the run came after Southeastern had already gotten off to a 13-0 lead behind an 8 run sixth inning.
