LEESBURG, Fla. – Cornerstone Softball opened their 2016 campaign with a 1-1 day down at the NTC Spring Games as they fell 11-1 in game one before defeating Mount Vernon 6-2 in game two. Brooke Leonard (SO/Zeeland, Mich.) got the win in the circle in the nightcap as the Golden Eagles will resume play on Monday against Trinity International at 9 a.m.

Game Flow

Game 1 – The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start as Harlie Sherman (SR/Centreville, Mich.) singled to lead off the game and was advanced on a sac bunt by Logan Myers (SO/Alpena, Mich.). After getting to third, Sherman then scored on a wild pitch to put CU up 1-0. That lead would last only until the bottom half of the inning as MVNU connected on a two-out 3-run homerun to take the 3-1 lead.

Rachel Nelson (SR/Grandville, Mich.) settled in inside the circle but walks and some timely hitting from the Cougars gave them a big sixth inning in which they ended the game on a grand slam to win 11-1

Game 2 – The Cougars took the momentum from game one right into the second and posted two runs in the top of the first inning but that would be their only scoring for the game.

After CU saw their first few innings end in 1-2-3 fashion, the bats broke lose in the bottom of the fifth as they posted four singles and a double to bring across six runs. Harlie Sherman highlighted the inning with a double as CU also saw singles from Caitlyn Hartline (JR/Marcellus, Mich.), Rachel Bode (SR/Manton, Mich.) Abby MacArthur (JR/Lachene, Mich.) and Logan Myers. Those six were the difference as CU saw freshman Rachel Younts (FR/Holton, Mich.) come in and finish off the win.
