GRAND RAPIDS - Mich. – Clay Keltner (FR/Highland, Ind.) got the ball to start the DH against visiting Marygrove on Tuesday and the freshman struck out the side in the opening frame in route to 10 K's on the day as the Golden Eagles posted a pair of wins over the Mustangs. CU won 5-1 in the opener and 15-4 in the nightcap to help push their record to 13-18 overall and 7-5 in the WHAC. Cornerstone heads to Siena Heights this weekend for a 4-game set beginning Friday.
Game Flow
Game 1 – It was a pitcher's duel for the first six innings as Cornerstone's Clay Keltner battled Marygrove's Reed Banner on the bump. Keltner struck out 10 in his seven innings of work while Banner held the Golden Eagles to just one run until the seventh inning.
That is where CU opened up the scoring as they took a 1-1 tie and brought across four runs on hits by Jonny Abbadusky (JR/Elverson, Pa.), Travis Gordon (SR/Lowell, Mich.) and Joe Corsten (FR/Howell, Mich.) while Jacob Klemme (SR/Plymouth, Wis.) and Brady Volmering (SO/Harbor Beach, Mich.) each walked. The big hit came from Corsten as the freshman hit a 2-out 2-RBI single to finish the scoring as Cornerstone got two shutdown innings from Brandon Willard (SR/Sylvan Lake, Mich.) to close out the win.
Game 2 – For as much as the pitching was strong in the first, it went to the hitters for the second game as the Golden Eagles scored as many runs in the opening inning (5) as they scored in all of game one. CU got an RBI groundout from Klemme, RBI single from Gordon, an RBI double from Aaron Krupansky (FR/Hartland, Mich.) and a 2-RBI single from Adam Harvey (SO/Antioch, Ill.) to open the 5-run lead.
Marygrove came back with four runs of the their own in the top of the third but that would be the only runs for the entire game as Troy Holstad (FR/Jenison, Mich.), Zack Coel (SR/Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Sean Masiakiewicz (SO/St. Louis, Mo.) combined to allow only five hits while striking out five. CU added runs of their own in the third (1), fourth (4) and fifth (5).
