GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Cornerstone bats came alive late in each game of their doubleheader tonight and they combined that with stellar pitching to pick up a sweep of rival Aquinas. CU won 6-0 in the opener and followed with a 5-2 win in the nightcap to improve to 8-11 overall and 2-2 in the WHAC. Cornerstone will host Concordia on Friday with game one slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
Game Flow
Game 1 – Game 1 - The scoring got started in the second inning when Caityln Hartline singled home Logan Myers (SO/Alpena, Mich.) but that would be all for either team until the fifth when CU doubled their lead on a Lizzy Albaugh bases-loaded walk. The Golden Eagles then put up four runs in the sixth to take full command in an inning highlighted by a 2-RBI single from Annie Fila (SO/Petoskey, Mich.).
CU got a solid outing in the circle from senior Rachel Nelson (SR/Grandville, Mich.) as she finished the complete game shutout with three strikeouts.
Game 2 – Aquinas got off to the fast start as they grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and that would be the only scoring until Albaugh hit a deep homerun in the fourth to knot the score at 1-1. The Saints re-took the lead in the sixth but the rally caps came out as CU started the final frame trailing 2-1.
The Golden Eagles got an RBI triple from Logan Myers that scored Chelsea Zylstra and that was followed by RBI singles from Jessica Wright (SO/Jenison, Mich.) and Caitlyn Hartline (JR/Marcellus, Mich.) to put CU up 4-2. The scoring was finished by Harlie Sherman (SR/Centreville, Mich.) who flew out to right field, scoring Alexsandra Szajna (SR/Washington, Mich.) on the play.
That was more than enough cushion for Brooke Leonard (SO/Zeeland, Mich.) as the sophomore took down the Saints with a 1-2-3 seventh to pick up her third win of the season.
