GRAND RAPIDS - Mich. – The bets struggled to come to life in the opener but then came through with some key swing in the nightcap as the Cornerstone baseball team split their mid-week doubleheader vs. Aquinas. CU dropped game one 6-4 before holding off a late comeback from the Saints in game two to win 4-3. Cornerstone, now 18-25 overall and 12-12 in the WHAC, will head to Concordia for a 4-game set Friday and Saturday.
Game Flow
Game 1 – The game featured only two separate half-innings where the teams scored and unfortunately for CU, the Saints brought across six in their scoring frame while the Golden Eagles only mustered four. After four scoreless innings from CU starter Collin Young (FR/Lancaster, Ohio), the Saints finally broke through and after a few hits and error, AQ led 6-0.
That lead held until the eighth inning when CU started the comeback as the Golden Eagles loaded the bases and Zach Bohl (SR/Hudsonville, Mich.) drew a walk. CU then got its second run on a wild pitch and the scoring was finished on a Seth Reigner (JR/Birdsboro, Pa.) 2-RBI single. That would be all the runs though as the AQ closer got the final five outs to preserve the win.
Game 2 – CU starter Clay Keltner (FR/Highland, Ind.) was strong once again and held the Saints to just one run through his 5.2 innings pitched. The CU offense came in the bottom of the fourth after AQ scored the first run in the top half of the inning. Jonny Abbadusky (JR/Elverson, Pa.) singled to left field that scored Jacob Klemme (SR/Plymouth, Wis.) and then Jonny was brought home on a bases-loaded walk by Brady Volmering (SO/Harbor Beach, Mich.).
CU added to their lead in the sixth when Volmering collected his second and third RBI's of the day as he doubled over the left fielder's head to put the Golden Eagles up 4-1. That lead was barely hung on to as Ryan Harris (SR/Crystal Lake, Ill.) came in to notch his fifth save of the season.
