GRAND RAPIDS - Mich. – The Golden Eagles moved their wining streak to four today with a 2-1 and 9-0 win over rival Aquinas College. Cornerstone has now has an overall mark of 11-18 on the year with a 5-5 WHAC record, as they will continue play on the road against Marygrove College starting on Friday at 2 p.m.

Game Flow

Game 1 – The day started with a pitching duel between Aquinas pitcher Nick Eely and Cornerstone's own Kyle Marburger (SR/Peru, Ind.), as Aquinas made only one dent in the game with an RBI single in the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Marburger and the relief of Brandon Willard (SR/Sylvan Lake, Mich.) would not give up anything else to the Saints giving up a total of just five hits in game one.

CU responded to the early Aquinas run in the sixth inning with a Jacob Klemme (SR/Plymouth, Wis.) bases loaded single that scored Brady Volmering (SO/Harbor Beach, Mich.) and Travis Gordon (SR/Lowell, Mich.) giving CU the 2-1 lead. That was all the Golden Eagles would need to get the win, as Aquinas would only see one more base runner after the sixth inning leading to a Cornerstone 2-1 victory.

Game 2 – Cornerstone got off to a hot start in game two scoring four runs off of the bat of four different batters that was highlighted by an RBI triple by Travis Gordon. Gordon kept it going for CU in the second inning with a two RBI double bringing the Cornerstone lead to 6-0. An error by the Saints in the third allowed for Masiakiewicz to score bringing the lead to 7-0 before the bats began to sow down for the Golden Eagles.

Along with the strong batting performance all afternoon long, senior Justin Geerts (SR/Surrey, B.C.) threw a complete game shutout giving up just seven hits while recording six strikeouts that helped the Golden Eagles come out with a 9-0 win in game two.
