GRAND RAPIDS - Mich. – Cornerstone was victim to a late inning rally by the top seed in their opening game and then couldn't contain a powerful Davenport lineup as they fell in both games on Day 1 of the WHAC Tournament to conclude their season. CU fell 4-3 to Madonna in the opener and 11-2 in the nightcap to the Panthers to finish the 2016 campaign at 19-33 overall.
Game Flow
Game 1 (L, 4-3 to Madonna) – It was a pitcher's duel for most of the day as Madonna's Evan Piechota went toe-to-toe with Cornerstone's Justin Geerts (SR/Surrey, B.C.) and it was the Golden Eagle who got the best of the opponent's lineup. Geerts finished the day going seven innings while not allowing a single run all while CU built a 3-0 lead headed into the seventh.
Cornerstone got their runs with a solo home run by Adam Harvey (SO/Antioch, Ill.) in the fourth and then added two more in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Joe Corsten (FR/Howell, Mich.) and RBI double from Jacob Klemme (SR/Plymouth, Wis.). That lead held until the bottom of the 8th when MU broke through with a 2-run homer to cut it to a single run and then the Crusaders scored two in the bottom of the ninth to post the 4-3 win.
Game 2 (L, 11-2 to Davenport) – After Davenport got upset in their opening game by Concordia, the Golden Eagles faced a tall task in the loser's bracket and the Panthers wasted little time as they built a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. CU started to chip away at the lead in the third with a run on a wild pitch to score Sean Masiakiewicz but DU countered with a single run of their own in the top of the fifth.
After CU again cut the lead to a single run on a Travis Gordon (SR/Lowell, Mich.) RBI ground out in the fifth, the game turned to all-Davenport as the Panthers scored the final eight runs of the contest to post the 11-2 win. Brandon White went the distance for DU on the mound as the junior struck out 10 CU batters.
