Softball to play at Davenport to open 6-game week


GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Golden Eagles will return to action on Wednesday and they will play three doubleheaders this week as conference action begins. They'll travel to No. 7 Davenport in a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for home on Wednesday at 3:30 before they hit the road to face Lourdes on Friday evening and Concordia on Saturday night. Cornerstone has a 5-11 overall record after winning both games against Purdue Northwest last week.
 
Scouting Davenport:
After being ranked No. 15 in the preseason poll, the Panthers have jumped to No. 7 thanks to a 20-2 record to start out the season. Davenport has a 6-1 record against teams ranked in the top 25. The Panthers have won the WHAC conference every year since 2011, except for 2013 when the Golden Eagles won it. Alexa Flores leads the team at the plate with a .403 batting average with three home runs and 20 RBI. Aby Brambila also has 20 RBI, along with a solid .385 batting average.

The three pitchers that have thrown for Davenport this season combine for an impressive 2.13 ERA. Sophomore Mallory Teunissen leads the team with a 1.60 ERA with a 10-2 record. Since 2009, Davenport holds an 18-8 record over Cornerstone.
 
Scouting Lourdes:
The Gray Wolves have a 4-10 overall record, with one of those wins coming against No. 2 Saint Xavier. Taylor Genzman leads the team with a .457 batting average. In the circle, Lourdes has four arms that combine for a 7.30 ERA.
 
Scouting Concordia:
The Cardinals have a 7-16 overall record. Amy Trionfi and Lindsey Pyle lead the team at the plate. Trionfi leads the team with a .329 batting average while Pyle leads the team with a .525 slugging percentage and three home runs.
Jessica England and Samantha Eubanks are the two main pitchers. Eubanks has a 2.43 ERA while England has a 3.48 ERA. They have combined for 11 complete games so far this season.
 
Hot Bat:
After going 5-for-7 with four RBI over both games at Purdue Northwest, Sophomore Rachel Younts has propelled herself to the top of Cornerstone's stat sheet in several categories, including: Hits (14), batting average (.311), RBI (9), Slugging (.411), and Total Bases (18)
 
Strong pitching and defense:
Younts and Brooke Leonard both threw complete games at Purdue Northwest. Rachel Younts has only given up three earned runs over her last 12.1 innings in the circle.
 
WHAC Outlook:
Davenport, who won the conference five of the last six seasons, is currently ranked No. 7 overall. Aquinas, who finished with a 10-34 record in 2016, have jumped out to a 20-1-1 start and are Receiving Votes in the polls. Other teams with winning records include Siena Heights (13-4-1 overall), UM-Dearborn (11-5-1), Northwestern Ohio (16-10), and Madonna (11-8).
