GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – As the season winds down, Cornerstone will play four of their final seven regular season games this upcoming week. CU will travel to Spring Arbor for a nine-inning game on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before returning home to host #RV Davenport for a three game series over the weekend. The three game set vs. Davenport is the final home series for the Golden Eagles this season. Senior day will take place during the series on Saturday, April 29 after game one that is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. All four games this week will have live video and stats available at cugoldeneagles.com.
Scouting Spring Arbor
Cornerstone will play a rescheduled nine-inning game vs. Crossroads League opponent Spring Arbor University on Wednesday that was originally scheduled to be played in the middle of March. The Cougars come into the year with a 19-26 record, and winners of three of their last six games. The SAU offense is carried by the senior power of Tyler Reed who leads the team in average (.324), RBI (38), and homeruns (9). Another senior in starting pitcher Brody Harris, who has recorded a team best 5-2 record, 56 strikeouts, and 4.34 ERA this season, leads Spring Arbor on the defensive side. As a team, the Cougars have really struggled in giving up runs early to their opponents, as opposing teams have scored 60 runs in the first inning against them this season.
Scouting #RV Davenport
After seeing four players drafted into the MLB last season, Davenport has rebuilt their roster once again to be one of the best in the WHAC. The Panthers have recorded a 32-13, 21-6 conference record this season to put them in second place in the WHAC standings this season. DU has won their last eight games, as they do most of their damage at the plate sitting fourth in the WHAC in total runs scored at 358. The junior duo of Austin Petravicius and Brian Sobieski has led the Panthers at the plate this season. Petravicius is batting a team high .404 to go along with 36 runs, while Sobieski is a power hitter who is batting .397 with nine HR's and 59 RBI. Davenport is also very fundamentally sound, as they lead the WHAC in fielding percentage so far this season. The pitching staff has been solid as well for DU, as the three main starters for Davenport have all recorded an ERA below four. The relief pitching of Jonathan Cheshire has also been crucial for DU, as he has pitched in 23 games and recorded a 6-3 record with a 2.73 ERA.
Last Week Recap
The Golden Eagles hit the road for the first time since the beginning of April last weekend, as they traveled to Marygrove College. CU took two of three from the struggling Mustangs to improve to 21-24, 13-12 WHAC and move into the crucial sixth and final playoff spot in the conference. Cornerstone has just seven games remaining on their 2016-17 regular season schedule, as this week they will travel to Spring Arbor for a game Wednesday before hosting RV Davenport for the final home series of the year.
Senior Day Celebration
Cornerstone will honor this year's senior class between games on Saturday vs. Davenport University. This year's senior class is small for the Golden Eagles, consisting of just three varsity players in
Jonny Abbadusky,
Seth Reigner, and
Evan Wagner along with one JV player in Danny Lawless.
Nearing 100
Cornerstone is now just three wins away from 100 franchise victories since the program restarted in 2013. The Golden Eagles have posted a 97-142 overall record in nearly five full seasons of play, to go along with a 57-87 conference record. First year head coach
Chuck Lowitzki looks to lead Cornerstone to the 100 win mark, as CU has seven more regular season games left this season. Lowitzki also has a chance to tie or pass the CU single season record for wins, which was previously recorded in 2015 when Cornerstone won 26 games.
Around the WHAC
Cornerstone has put themselves in solid position to make the conference tournament, recording a 13-12 record in the WHAC. Other teams competing for the final spot are Aquinas and Siena Heights. Aquinas still has Concordia and No. 19 Indiana Tech left to play, Siena Heights has No. 19 Indiana Tech and No. 8 UNOH, while Cornerstone has RV Davenport and Lourdes.
Senior Leadership
As we prepare to honor the Golden Eagle's senior class, it is important to note that the three varsity seniors have all had career years in their final season.
Jonny Abbadusky (.401),
Seth Reigner (.386), and
Evan Wagner (.360) sit top three in batting average this season. Abbadusky alone is dominating in almost every statistical category leading CU in average, hits, runs, OB%, stolen bases, total bases, and hit by pitch. Reigner has seen limited time in the DH role this season, but has taken full advantage of his opportunities, going 22-57 at the plate with a .491 SLG% and a team low eight strikeouts. Wagner has had a career year returning from injury, leading CU in SLG% at .509 to go along with 28 RBI. All three seniors have career highs in batting average this season.
Burton Earning Free Bases
Redshirt freshman and Central Michigan Transfer
Jarod Burton has had an excellent eye at the plate, as he has earned 31 walks this season to lead the Golden Eagles. Burton has tied the franchise record for total number of walks tying
Jonny Abbadusky (31 in 2015) and
Travis Gordon (31 in 2014). Burton drew a walk in two games played this weekend at Marygrove to tie the record. Overall, Burton is batting .299 on the year with a team third best 31 RBI.
Bullpen Performance
The trio of first year Golden Eagles
Noah Reed,
Daniel Abbgy, and
Alan LaBov has been lights out as of late in the bullpen. The trio has given up a total of just one earned run since their early April series vs. Northwestern Ohio, while all three pitchers threw scoreless outings in their appearances at Marygrove last weekend.
