The 16th ranked Taylor Trojans have gotten off to a 6-1-0 start, powered by a prolific offense. The Trojans have averaged just over 14 shots on goal per game, to rank eighth in the NAIA in that category. The duo of junior Bailey Zehr and Nikki Zaino have highlighted the high-powered Taylor offense, as they have combined for 12 of the teams 21 goals and six of the teams 13 assists. Defensively, Lauren Engelkes has seen the majority of starts in net, recording a 3-1 record and a .842 save percentage.
Scouting Lawrence Tech
In their sixth year of having a women's soccer program, Lawrence Tech has started the season 2-4-0. LTU finished 5-5 in the WHAC in 2016 for sixth place in conference play. Sophomore forward Tia Lamie has been the bright spot for the Blue Devils, scoring four goals to lead the team. Before taking on Cornerstone to end the week, Lawrence Tech will complete their non-conference season at Huntington University. Second year head coach Andy Richards looks to build off his first season where he helped LTU to their only winning season in program history.
History vs. This Week's Opponents
Cornerstone holds winning records all-time vs. both of this weeks opponents. CU is 6-2-1 all-time vs. Taylor University, who they have not played since 2013. Last time these two opponents met, the Trojans shutout the Golden Eagles in Grand Rapids to earn a 1-0 victory. Against Lawrence Tech, CU also holds a winning record of 4-1-0. The Golden Eagles won the first four appearances outscoring the Blue Devils 16-2 in those games. Lawrence Tech did earn the victory last time out though, defeating CU for the first time in program history 2-1 in Southfield, Michigan.
Johns Big Week
Senior midfielder
Tori Johns recorded a big week for the Golden Eagles, scoring two of the teams three goals for the week. Tori's two goals gives her a new season record, as she tallied just one goal in each of her first three seasons at Cornerstone. Johns is now tied with teammate
Erica Mick for the team lead in goals (2) and points (4) this season.
WHAC History
Cornerstone enters the 2017 conference season just one win away from 100 in programs history. CU is in their 20th year of having a women's soccer program, holding a 99-84-18 (.541) WHAC record.
Randy Strawser, now in his 18th season as head coach, has helped the Golden Eagles to 88 of those conference wins with an 88-61-17 (.591) record. Last season CU struggled in conference play, posting just a 3-7-0 WHAC record.
