GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles are set for their conference home opener as they will take on Madonna University in a three game series this weekend. The series will see a single nine-inning game played on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a double-header of nine-inning games on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Cornerstone currently sits at 3-1 overall and 2-1 in WHAC play. The Golden Eagles traveled to Lawrence Tech to open the conference season last weekend and won two of three against the Blue Devils. The starting pitching was a highlight, as
Kyle Herrick and
Collin Young both had seven inning outings where they game up just one earned run. Offensively,
Gabe Zeiger continued his hot start going 8-12 at the plate in the three game series.
Jarod Burton also had a strong series, recording the first and only homerun for CU so far this season.
Golden Eagle of the Week
Senior
Kyle Herrick was named Cornerstone Golden Eagle of the week for his outstanding pitching performance at Lawrence Tech last Friday. Herrick through a one-hitter, striking out eight in 7.0 innings pitched. In two starts this season, Herrick is 1-0 with a 0.90 ERA and 13 strikeouts.
Scouting Madonna
Madonna has started off strong once again in the 2017-18 season, as they are off to a 3-0 start with a sweep of conference foe Siena Heights. In those first three games the offense shined for the Crusaders, scoring 10 or more runs in each outing. Madonna has seven players hitting above .400 through their first three games and junior Jalen Thomas already has two homeruns. In the 2016-17 season the Crusaders finished fifth in the WHAC with a 21-10 conference record.
History vs. MU
Cornerstone has struggled vs. Madonna in the past, going just 4-15 all-time. Last season, Cornerstone played Madonna twice in the regular season and fell both times. CU was then eliminated by Madonna 8-0 in the conference tournament in Slyvania, Ohio last May.
