GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Softball played their first two home games of the season as their offense woke up, led by
Moriah Sprague in a sweep over IUSB 10-8 and 6-1. Sprague had a perfect day going 5-5 from the plate between the two games, that included four extra base hits which one of those being a three-run homerun. Cornerstone found clutch hitting from all across the lineup between the two games as
McKenna Glide went the distance in game two, giving up one unearned run. Cornerstone will continue their home stand against #RV Madonna on Friday, March 24 for an hour earlier start at 2:30 p.m.
Game One Highlights – Cornerstone 10 – IUSB - 8
- Mikayla Meade got the start for the Golden Eagles for their home opener and works around back-to-back hits to get out of the first inning scoreless. Cornerstone got the offense going quick as Sydney Carr ripped a one-out double to make it second and third with one out. A run would score on a squeeze bunt by Alyssa Braam and Moriah Sprague would follow that up hitting a monster three-run homerun to center field to give Cornerstone the 4-0 lead after the first.
- Meade ran into the trouble in the top of third as the first six batters for IUSB reached via a hit as two runs would score, as they had the bases loaded still with no outs. Meade would limit the damage giving up one more run on a sac fly to keep Cornerstone infront 4-3. Cornerstone answered with a two-out rally thanks to back-to-back doubles by Moriah Sprague and Maddy Chatman to extend the Golden Eagle lead 5-3 after the third.
- Meade struggles in the top half of the fifth allowing the first four batters to reach as it is now 5-4 Cornerstone. Alyssa Braam comes into the game and gets the next two batters via a strikeout and sac fly as IUSB ties the game 5-5. IUSB scores three more runs thanks to a triple as they take the lead 8-5 while Cornerstone finds themselves down for the first time this game.
- Cornerstone strikes back right away in the bottom of the fifth as Bailey Anson comes up to the plate with the bases loaded and drives home a run with a sac fly. Two batters later, Delaney Wilson comes up clutch with a two-run single to tie the game 8-8, immediately erasing the IUSB lead at the end of the fifth.
- After Moriah Sprague hits her third double of the game, Cornerstone had runners on second and third as they had a chance to take the lead. Paige Liddell reaches on a throwing error by the IUSB third baseman to give Cornerstone the 9-8 lead. Another run scores on a perfectly executed double steal as Cornerstone adds an insurance run to take the 10-8 lead after the sixth inning.
- Alyssa Braam shuts the door in the top of the seventh to give Cornerstone the 10-8 victory in the first game.
Game Two Highlights - Cornerstone - 6 IUSB - 1
- McKenna Glide got the start for the Golden Eagles in the second game against IUSB and works a quick top of the first, stranding the runner at third.
- Cornerstone strikes first in the bottom of the second as Maddy Chatman sent a ball over the left field fence for her first homerun of the season, giving Cornerstone a 1-0 lead.
- Glide was cruising through the first two innings before an error by the Golden Eagles allowed the batter to reach as she would eventually score on a groundout to the game 1-1.
- Cornerstone retakes the lead in the bottom half of third thanks to the first three batters reaching base. Moriah Sprague continued her great day driving in a run with a sac fly as Morgan Jenkins would follow her up with an RBI single through the left side, making it a 3-1 Cornerstone lead.
- McKenna Glide has settled in nicely after the third inning as she has kept the IUSB bats quiet striking out a pair of batters, Cornerstone continues to lead 3-1. Moriah Sprague has continued her excellent day at the plate as she drives in a run with a hard single up the middle, extending the Golden Eagle lead 4-1. Cornerstone would tack on two more runs thanks to sac fly by Sydney Tilma and an RBI single by Sam Timmer making it 6-1 after the fifth.
- McKenna Glide continued to do her thing, shutting down the IUSB batters going the distance to give Cornerstone the 6-1 victory.
