LIVONIA, Mich. – After hitting the road to take on the Crusaders of Madonna, Cornerstone came away with a game one victory 5-3 thanks to clutch hitting a great performance from
Lucas Vega. In game two, a
Matthew Kindley eighth inning homerun was the difference maker as Cornerstone won 7-6 to complete the sweep. The Golden Eagles have now swept their last three series and have a six-game winning streak as they improve to 11-18 on the year. Baseball returns home to face off against Aquinas for a double header on Tuesday, April 2 for a double header starting at 1 p.m.
Game One Highlights – Cornerstone – 5 Madonna - 3
- JC Salinas opened the game with a single and a stolen base to give the Golden Eagles a runner in scoring position. Drew Goodman would bring home Salinas on a fielder's choice to give Cornerstone the 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
- Madonna opened the bottom of the third with a double and a few batters later, scored two runs on a single into right field to take a 2-1 advantage over Cornerstone.
- Back-to-back singles from JC Salinas and Andrew Eley gave Cornerstone runners on a second and third with one out. Andrew Meny would come through with a two RBI single into right field to give Cornerstone a 3-2 lead over Madonna after the top of the fifth.
- Madonna would score one right back thanks to three straight singles to tie the game 3-3 heading into the sixth inning.
- Ben Barnes and Gannon Fox opened the sixth with singles and a perfectly executed sac bunt from Ethan Lajiness gave the Golden Eagles runners on second and third with one out. Daniel Freeman would come through with a single up the middle that would score two to give Cornerstone a 5-3 lead.
- Lucas Vega would shut down the Madonna offense in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a couple strikeouts to head into the final inning.
- Cornerstone would go on to win game one, 5-3 thanks to clutch hitting and Lucas Vega going all seven innings.
Game Two Highlights – Cornerstone – 7 Madonna – 6
- Madonna scored first in game two, coming through with a two out RBI single to take a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
- Andrew Eley tied the game at one in the top of the third with a double into left field. A groundout and a wild pitch later, Cornerstone took a 3-1 lead over Madonna.
- Madonna answered right back with a two-run double to knot the game up at three. The next batter would single into left field as the Crusaders would take a 4-3 lead after the third inning.
- Ben Barnes and Gannon Fox opened the fourth inning with back-to-back singles and would advance to second and third on a passed ball. Corbin Westerkamp would walk in a run to tie the game 4-4 as Cornerstone continues to have the bases loaded. JC Salinas would give Cornerstone the lead on a sac fly, making it 5-4 after the top of the fourth.
- Ben Barnes brought in a run in the top of the fifth with a sac fly to extend Cornerstones lead 6-4.
- A double and a single in the bottom of the seventh by Madonna tied the game at six, heading into the eighth inning.
- Matthew Kindley opened the eighth inning with solo homerun to right field to give Cornerstone a 7-6 lead.
- Cam VanPutten would come in and close the door in game two to complete the sweep of Madonna, winning game two 7-6.
