Opening Day ends in defeat for Baseball

 DAVENPORT, Fla. – It was opening day for baseball down in Florida as they faced off against #8 Webber and New College of Florida. It was a pitcher's duel early in game one before the Warriors found runs late to pull away from the Golden Eagles in a 6-1 defeat. The Golden Eagles would later face off against New College of Florida and would be run ruled in a 10-0 loss. The rust is off as baseball will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Grand View at 12 p.m.
 
Game One Recap: #8 Webber – 6 Cornerstone - 1
  • Brody Nelson opened the 2025 season with a scoreless first inning with a strikeout. Andrew Meny collected the first hit of the 2025 season with a single into center as the game is scoreless after the first.
  • The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second thanks to a single and two walks but were unable to scratch a run home as the game remained scoreless after two.
  • Trent Spalding made a highlight real play robbing a two-run homerun to end the inning to keep the game scoreless after the top of the third.
  • Thanks to two walks in the inning, Corbin Westerkamp brought home the first runs of the year with an RBI single into left field to help CU take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Webber would respond right away in the top of the fifth as free bases allowed them to tie the game at one. They would scratch across another on a Golden Eagle error to take a 2-1 lead.
  • The Warriors would open the sixth with a leadoff double and would later bring that run in on a groundout to extend their lead 3-1 over the Golden Eagles.
  • Thanks to more free bases by the Golden Eagles, Webber was able to score three more times in the top of the seventh to extend their lead 6-1.
  • The Golden Eagles threatened in the bottom of the seventh but left the bases loaded as Webber leads 6-1 as the game heads to the eighth.
  • Cornerstone goes down quiet in the bottom of the ninth as Webber takes the game 6-1 over the Golden Eagles.
Game Two Recap: - New College of Florida – 10 Cornerstone – 0
  • New College struck first in the bottom of the first with a solo homerun to take a 1-0 lead over the Golden Eagles.
  • Matthew Kindley opened the second with a walk as Grant DeRose followed with a single to make it first and second with no outs. The Mighty Banyans would then work around that jam as they kept the Golden Eagles off the board.
  • The Golden Eagles threatened once again in the top of the third but left runners on both second and third as New College continued to lead 1-0.
  • The Mighty Banyans have used timely hitting in a big inning to extend their lead 4-0 over the Golden Eagles after the third.
  • Grant DeRose opened the fourth inning with a double off the left field wall but would be left at second as the Golden Eagles were held off the board.
  • Connor Comiskey worked around a jam with a strikeout looking to keep the Mighty Banyans at four after four.
  • A leadoff triple by New College comes around to score as that extended their lead 5-0 over the Golden Eagles in the fifth.
  • New College has blown the game open in the sixth as three more runs cross the plate as they now lead 8-0 over the Golden Eagles.
  • The Mighty Banyans run rule the Golden Eagles as they scored two in the bottom of the seventh to win the game 10-0.
By the Numbers:
19 – Golden Eagle pitchers walked 19 batters while striking out just six
6.1 – Brody Nelson and Noah Weaver highlighted the pitchers with a combined 6.1 scoreless innings on the mound
3 – Andrew Eley and Grant DeRose led the offense with three hits each
 
What's Next?
The Golden Eagles will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Grand View at 12 p.m.
