A Quiet Contest for Softball In Second Game Against William Penn

Rosemont, Ill. – Softball continued their opening weekend on Friday, February 13th against the Statesmen of William Penn University. The Golden Eagles struggled to make contact in the second game of the day, with only three total hits in the six innings. The Statesmen, who lost to the Golden Eagles the day before, managed to turn it around to take a commanding win 8-0 over Cornerstone University. Gabby Mecca, Sam Timmer, and Paige Liddell each had one total hit for a team total of 3 in the contest against William Penn. The Golden Eagles continue on in the tournament with two more games on Saturday, February 14th with games against Olivet Nazarene at 6 p.m. and IU Southeast at 8 p.m. EST.

Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 0 William Penn (Iowa) – 8

  • Sam Timmer singled to left center field to get the first base-hit of the contest.

  • Dylan Holmes reached on fielder's choice as Sam Timmer was able to reach second base.

  • Cornerstone was unable to get offense going in the bottom of the second, but pushed forward without allowing a run.

  • The third inning saw the Statesmen to three runs as a triple sent three runners home.

  • Two big errors by the Cornerstone fielders saw William Penn to four more runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Golden Eagles managed to get one hit in the bottom of the fourth but they did not see a player around the diamond to score.

  • The final score of game two of the day came in the top of the fifth inning as William Penn dug the dagger. Cornerstone managed to get one more hit on the day by Paige Liddell but they took a hard defeat against William Penn 8-0.

By the Numbers:

3 – Sam Timmer Paige Liddell, and Gabby Mecca all totaled one hit on the day for a team total of 3.

0-5 – Cornerstone was unable to strikeout the strong batting lineup from the Statesmen who had a total of five strikeouts against the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles continue on in the tournament with two more games on Saturday, February 14th with games against Olivet Nazarene at 6 p.m. and IU Southeast at 8 p.m. EST.
